New Star Wars Canon Books

Emissary of the Prophets

I have to say I was mightily annoyed when the previous books were 'de-canonised.' I liked the continuing adventures of the old heroes and spent a lot of money on those books. I know I can still enjoy them and have just come to the end of the New Jedi Order...yet again.

I read a lot as I live alone at the moment and travel back to work on the bus. I was quite keen on reading Tarkin by James Luceno and pretty much devoured it in a weekend. I really enjoyed it and it was refreshing to read a book told from the villains side rather than the hero leading the action. I wasn't overly keen on the flashback stuff, which was ok, and wanted more story set in the present as it were.

I have yet to read any of the other new releases and wanted to get an idea as to what other people thought.

I have to say, I'm a bit confused as to how much praise the Plageuis novel seems to get. I thought it was just OK for a Star Wars novel. A bit pedantic at times, but that's to be expected from a books that seems based around the notion of filling in continuity gaps.

As a story in it's own right I didn't find it nearly as engaging as say the early X-Wing novels, 'I, Jedi' or even the recent 'New Dawn' tie-in for SWR.

Not that I think people shouldn't like it or anything of the sort, I'm just curious what is so appealing to make it the "best" SW novel ever? Though I realise that the competition isn't exactly stellar for the most part.

Well, I'd say there is a lot of competition for best SW book personally. I wouldn't put Plageius in the top 10, but I really like dozens of SW books, so its not really a mark against Plageius so much as there is a lot of awesome to compete with. As for the new books, I didn't bother with the Rebels tie in, but I liked Tarkin. I plan to read Heir to the Jedi and Lords of the Sith as soon as I can.

Tarkin was a solid read, and I liked the concept of Tarkin being part of a quasi-triumvirate with Vader and the Emperor. That helped explain how Tarkin was the only Imperial who could order Vader around and seemed to be his equal.
Starting New Dawn this weekend.

Plageuis is brilliant for revealing the entire back story of Sidious, the most important character in the franchise. For delving into the nature of the Force and the Dark Side. For exploring such a fascinating character in Plageuis, who is not evil for the sake of evil, but genuinely believes what he's doing will help the galaxy. For tying together every little piece of continuity of the Prequel Era. For making Phantom Menace infinitely more interesting. For the relationship between Sidious and Plageuis. For the unending history lesson of the Star Wars universe. For not using the first name "Sheev".
