Military service might be the only choice to get a better life for a young unprivileged person in the Empire. You get an education and learn usefull skills and get a regular paycheck so that you can start a life when you finished your sevice.
At the beginning of ANH Luke tells us exactly that - his only way off Tatooine is the imperial military so he was planning to join, all of his friends already have.
Yeah but presumably a younger Han would have been much better at getting by on his own, and would be able to create better opportunities for himself than some naive farm boy like Luke.
He was probably already hitching rides on freighters and learning the ropes from smugglers by the age we see Luke at in ANH.

Maybe Han will explain a little about his youth and background in the new film (or films). Who knows. I can live with the Imperial Academy-and-freeing Chewbacca backstory and I like it, but if a new official history for the character is eventually established I'm cool with that. Han Solo became one of the most popular and iconic characters of the Lucas universe with almost no revealed backstory outside the novels, comic books and other EU sources so it's pretty clear he doesn't really need a detailed history. We'll apparently love him just the same.
Yeah as a kid the only backstory that ever remotely interested me was Obi-Wans and Anakin's. I never really gave much thought to what kind of life Han or Chewie or anyone else had before we met them.
None of them seemed to be carrying any dark secrets or hidden agendas that might demand an explanation, and there just didn't seem to be much more to explore with them.

In the EU he was raised by a pirate and joined the Academy for a shot at respectability and reinventing himself.
I just finished the last episode of The Clone Wars.
That was freaking awesome! What a fantastic show. I'm kicking myself for dismissing it out of hand and never giving it a chance when it first aired. And I'm so glad that Filoni and a bunch of other people who worked on TCW are now working on Rebels. I just hope they're able to reach the very high bar they set with TCW.
I really, really enjoyed that. So much, in fact, that I'm actually thinking about watching through the whole series again.

Actually, unless SW:Rebels gets cancelled prematurely (Disney-eyeroll) maybe they'll deal with that near the end of the series so as to tie into Episode IV. As to your barfing emoticon I agree that it's not the most original idea ever...

Today we were contacted by someone with a lot of tiny Star Wars Rebels details. A few of these details were known to us and not many more, so they check out. Other details are know from other places but we’re going to share them anyways.
Ezra was born in the first year of the Empire.
This is a detail we could have guessed based on when the show takes place and Ezra’s age. However, we’ve never heard it put so “poetically.” It makes Ezra a true child of the Empire.
Sabine has a way of making her explosions look beautiful.
I’m not sure if this is new information or not. We know she tags on things. We know she is an explosives expert. I’m guessing her rebellious attacks have a way making an artistic, if not theatrical statement. But that’s my guess.
A Devaronian named Vizago is an underground dealer/crime lord on Lothal.
We heard that Star Wars: Underworld was going to feature a lot of plots about how the underworld and 1313 supplied weapons to the rebellion. Perhaps we are going to see how this unfolds at the micro level? Also, we saw Hondo supplying weapons to the rebels on Onderon in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Obi-Wan does appear in the pilot, but only as a holographic recording.
So that explains why he has an action figure!
Kanan is in possession of a holocron.
So that explains the Lego sets and might give a lot of credit to some early speculation on why the Inquisitor is sent by the Emperor or Darth Vader (depending on who you ask) to hunt Kanan.
Apparently, there is a thing called Kessel spice mines (I only knew the Kessel run), but they’ll appear, too.

Perhaps this image we first saw was a hint at this? I guess this is where he lives until this new adopted family of freedom fighters find him? Does this mean Ezra is kind of the communications expert of the bunch because of his time finding shelter in these spots? Very cool either way!

Well, of course he is. He's ripped off from Pavan in Coruscant Nights, after all.
I always found the backstory that Han was once an Imperial officer to be absolutely fascinating. It's such an interesting dynamic and I think it works. He was a poor kid who wanted to become a pilot and somehow managed to join the Imperial Starfleet. And I also like the idea he was thrown out for saving Chewbacca. This is one aspect of the EU I would very much like to see kept.

Every time I see one of these videos showing the concept art and storyboards, I'm struck by how much richer the character design is in the hand-drawn 2D art before it gets homogenized by the 3D CGI. It makes me wish they'd made this show in 2D.

Meh. The names don't really bug me very much so long as they don't walk around being called something along the lines of "Vengeful McStabbalot." It's a given that in this fictional galaxy many bad guys have the names to go with their personalities, powers and/or assigned duties. Just give me an Imperial character I can enjoy as they chew the scenery.

Not that that's a bad thing. Star Wars was created to be an homage to classic comic strips and Saturday matinee adventure serials, so it's in its nature to be broad and cartoony. Some fans have tried to elevate it into this big serious important thing that must be taken seriously because it's important and serious, but at its heart it's pulpy, cartoony, kid-friendly adventure with a sense of humor about itself. Or at least it is in its good installments. (And, okay, The Phantom Menace tried to be the same, but did so very badly.)

And I have to agree about the 2D. While I have no problem with the slightly more Disneyish animation like others do, the show would have probably felt a lot more unique and original in a traditional 2D style.

Well, I'm not the sort to prefer tradition for its own sake; I just think the designs look better in the 2D art. Both 2D and 3D can be worthwhile styles -- I think the current 3D-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has very creative design work and fantastic storyboarding -- but the problem is that 3D is so fashionable these days that 2D is getting marginalized.
