New Star Trek Series Beams to Netflix International services Exclusively

It's a rigged system. Dropping tiers makes remaining services more expensive.

I don't know what service you're on, but the whole reason there are tiers and channel packages is pricing.

I've dropped to lower priced tiers in the past. It's very easy to do. Plus, if you have a sports package or "Lifestyle" type package that you don't use you can drop that too.

For me, it's not just tiers, my provider offers bundling packages which allow a discount. It's like getting one service free with the bundle. Remove something and the bundle discount goes away leaving one less service for the same price.

Can't say I'm thrilled with any of this. I'm not a member of Netflix and I certainly do not intend to subscribe just for a new Trek. [And CBS All Access thing sounds laughable for U.S viewers] It all seems to needlessly...limiting for a Trek show. It would obviously garner a far bigger audience if it was just released on regular tv stations instead of being exclusively tied to subscription based services.

If it's only available online, I won't be watching.

This is one of those "can't please everyone" scenarios. People who are unable/unwilling to watch it online are not happy and if it was only on TV, all the cord-cutters would be unhappy.

If it was on the CBS broadcast network in the US, nobody would have complained. Cord cutters and non cord cutters would have a way to see it. I still sort of think that in addition to CBS All Access they should put it in the On Demand section under CBS for cable subscribers. Netflix does make sense for overseas distribution, just as they have done with Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad. The channels are different overseas. There is a CBS reality channel available in Denmark for example, but it probably only has 10,000 subscribers, and Star Trek doesn't really belong on a reality channel. In the UK there is a CBS Action channel that airs reruns of Star Trek, but the point is that the CBS channels in Europe are not a practical way of distributing the series. I do wonder who will distribute Star Trek in China as Netflix does not operate there.

I watch Netflix quite happily on my smart TV here in England through the app. I think it's a very good solution.

CBS On Demand doesn't generate any extra revenue for CBS. If it was available On Demand then the only people subscribing to CBSAA would be cord cutters which are still a minority. That wouldn't generate enough revenue to pay for the show. CBS needs people to pay for CBSAA to justify the production costs. Otherwise they would have been better off selling the show to Netflix.

I believe that they will most likely allow cable systems to sell each episode in the Pay per view section. They can then use the higher total price of buying eps individually, as a selling point for All Access...hey, instesd of shelling out $2 per episode, sign up for All Access for and get it cheaper along with all our other fine offerings!
There's too much potential profit to be made to not make it as easily available (for purchase).

This is awesome for me actually, in Canada I was forced to use Proxy's to get Star Trek, but I just checked today and all of the Star Trek's except for the TOS movies are now on Netflix. Looks like I'm going to be able to watch all of Star Trek before the new show is out.

Yea, It'll be on Space only. I was commenting on the part where Netflix landed a deal for all the old Star Trek's. Sorry, didn't make that clear.

I am also concerned about the CBS All Access negatively affecting viewership in the US. It would be possible to make this work if it was, as someone mentioned earlier, available on On Demand for those with cable, but without I know they're likely to lose the viewership of a lot of Baby Boomers who make up a large part of the Trek market. I know my own parents who are of this generation would be interesting in watching the new show, but have no feasible way to watch it online.

As far as Netflix getting the international rights... well, I am psyched. It's so much better than having to watch it terribly dubbed on German TV.

I'm rea;;y happy about Netflix streaming the show in the UK. I'm a subscriber and had been worried about how I was going to see the new show. Plus, I'm doing a DS9/ENT re-watch into the bargain.

Description is in finnish, but goes something like this: "Brand new series in the scifi-saga brings a new ship and new characters. Mission of the crew is to explore new worlds and give hope to the new generation."

Will need to go and complain on the Netflix support that why havent rest of the series been added to the service yet.. Want to start binge watching them already...

Their deal includes the 5 older shows, so its only a matter of time before they're added. News reports said "'by the end of the year..."

I don't think anyone's mentioned this, but one good POSSIBLE thing of having this new show available on a subscription service and not on the CBS Television network, is that they can make the actual episodes longer in length (maybe even a full 60 minutes). If the show was on network television, the episodes would only be 40 - 45 minutes in length.
To me, if they did that, it would almost be worth it. You'd be surprised in how much story you could cram into an additional 12 - 15 minutes.

Unless of course they purposely make the episodes 45 minutes long for FUTURE USE on commercial TV.
