New Spider-Man cartoon: Ultimate Spider-Man

I think Marvel should let Greg Weisman do a comic-book (limited?) series wrapping up his intended storylines for Spectacular Spider-Man. And while they're at it, since they're owned by Disney now, they should let Weisman start up the Gargoyles comics again.

When they said this would take from the Ultimate book, I thought maybe loosely adapting earlier storylines. Not taking the premise from the current arc where Peter is being trained (rather humorously by Iron Man who has no idea what he's doing) by the Ultimates. Oh well. I will wait for a trailer...

Hmm, looked okay, and I liked some of the visual bits (like the web heart on the window), but the dialogue was a bit clunky. Any word on who that was playing Spidey?

Glad I got to see that. It's almost certain to get yanked at some point.

I guess at this point mass media outlets are stuck with the Samuel L. Jackson version of Nick Fury. Wonder how one would react to seeing the regular 616 Nick Fury if the movies and current cartoons are your only exposure to the character?

Thought the style looked good, the colors and action. Wish we had gotten at least a glimpse of a classic foe though.

Nick Fury, drawn to look like SLJ, has been part of the Ultimate line years before Iron Man came out.

Crap. I've been waiting to see what the designs looked like. I'm rarely a fan of Marvel cartoon designs, though I liked the ones in The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Right. As I've heard it, Jackson gave Marvel the rights to use his likeness for Ultimate Nick Fury, in exchange for which they promised that if they used the character in movies, Jackson would be the first actor they'd offer the role to.

Basically the case for me: I started reading the Ultimate line a while before I interested myself in the 'main' universe--and yes, I was a bit startled by a white Nick Fury. But then, the same thing happened when they cast a white man for Green Lantern, since the only version of the character I was familiar with was John Stewart from the Justice League cartoon.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Good point there as well. The Green Lantern concept characters best exposure was during the Cartoon Networks two shows which both didn't feature the alleged "best" GL.

I was glad John was in the spotlight. Felt he had the most depth of the 4 Earth GL's. I think I was one of about 50 people who read his early/mid 90's series titled Mosaic. Don't think the series is in TPB but someone on Ebay is often selling issues. If you like John maybe check it out.

I'm fond of both versions of Fury. They both have their own unique characteristics. I never heard that Sam Jackson provided his likeness to Marvel in return that he play the character. The story that Mark Millar has told was that he liked the idea of Sam Jackson as Nick Fury and asked Bryan Hitch to draw him that way. Jackson's attention was brought to the book and liked it. They used the likeness of George W. Bush as well and I'm pretty sure Bush never gave his likeness rights to Marvel so he could play himself ;)

As for the use of this character in various media now...it was only inevitable. The character is pretty popular now. Both versions of the characters are key components in their respective realities.

I don't like the "invisible Dick Tracy wristwatch", or whatever the hell that is. In fact, I hated it even more the second time through. I'd be more OK with some Robin-like holography as in Young Justice.

^ Yeah I don't like that either but a Spider apprentice needs a way to speak with his Shield handler doesn't he? LOL.
