New Species Revamps on DSC?

It's not true, though - it definitely would have been different. Even if they were considered interchangeable for purposes of the show's premise, it wouldn't have been long before the differences in the characters of the respective empires and their histories in Trek would have shown up in writing, direction, actor and acting choices, etc. The butterflies would have done their job - it would have been a very different show. The most obvious difference that occurs to me right away is that they might have brought Tomalak (Andreas Katsulas) in as the big bad. He's a good actor, and I'm sure it would have been fine - but can you imagine DS9 without Dukat (Marc Alaimo)? The next is that I'm almost certain our "simple Romulan tailor" would have been played very differently, too...

Marc Alaimo was also the first Romulan on TNG, in "The Neutral Zone." ...In some multiverse dimension out there, he's a Romulan baddie on DS9.

I'm glad he wound up on B5 instead. He gave the best acting performance of anybody on that show as G'Kar.

Yeah. I've actually been peppering my YouTube views lately with random scenes from the series. Great show.

I think his Tomolak in "All Good Things" was too much G'Kar, in fact. Though maybe it was the way it was written; I don't remember Tomolak ever being jokey earlier in the series.

Imagine a DS9 with Tomolak, Alaimo, maybe Sela, Romulan Garak...Garok, proconsuls, praetors, senators and others showing up. Ben Cross would have been a great Romulan baddie.

While I'm no fan of Discovery and I'm not feelin' the black eyes instead of yellow, I really like the fact they reached back and brought in one of the species designed for TMP it's LONG overdue

Yeah, he should have purple skin and yellow Admiral Akbar eyes. Also he's too scaly and looks like the primitive ancestor or a "modern" Saurian, but I'm just so glad they're going there, you know?

Which also brings us to what DS9 would have looked like if it were designed by Romulans. Going by the "organic" bird design of the D'deridex, maybe a giant organic nest, a la nBSG's Cylon Colony, aflame in Romulan blood green?

Or they could have stayed with the original concept of the series and designed a totally alien station (maybe one that's been built over countless times over the millennia) that the Romulans coopted for their occupation, but that no-one knows who built? The Ancient Bajorans? The Prophets? Someone totally different?

Could have been a Bajoran mining station that was taken over and converted in to a work labor camp by the Romulans.

Why should he have purple skin?

Catian would be nice.. there doing full face makeup for the Klingons.. so wouldn't be to much different
Arex's race.. but re designed abit.. having a 3rd arm right in the middle of the chest?? Make the body instead of Bi semitry, have Tri semetry.. like a triangle body. Probably CGI so go all out!
More Andorians and Telerites. Have them as speaking parts of the crew, Explore the Telerites as a species!! We have backstory on Andorians, and Vulcans.. Telerites? There assholes.. thats about it :)
How about some of the aliens they showed in Star Trek beyond show up? Like that alien face hugger head chick!

Arcturians from TMP. Visually, they might as well be the Zakdorn, but their backstory is mental:

A militaristic race of great armies. All are identical – they clone each other, can only tell apart by color of uniforms. Provide infantry for Federation. Planet is enormous and population enormous, subject to any amount of expansion; 100 billion population, army of 20 billion ready overnight. Click!

Where were these guys when the Jem'Hadar were causing trouble?

Why should he have purple skin?
That’s what the original looked like. The gray with black eyes is too prosaic. Get some color in there ; they’re aliens. Might as well make the Orions and Andorians human colored. “Oh they’re just different races of Orions.” Uh huh.

That was one minor extra that hardly anyone even remembers.
The Trek Yard guys can milk 30 minutes of discussion on that sleestak's eye color, but almost no one else will care. For all practical purposes Linus is the first saurian character. The other one might as well have been a cardboard cutout.

I'm hoping that they show a Horta (TEH CANON VIOLATION!!1!) as a giant menacing butterfly.

Let's GOOOOOO DISCO!!

Why can't the saurians have different skin colours? Why can't aliens be as diverse as Humans?
Because for almost 40 years the only canon picture of a Saurian we have has a very specific look and even though we know that a sample size of 1 is way to little to properly account for common variations within a species it has burned itself into our collective memory as "The Way Saurians Look".

This was the only appearance of a Saurian on screen in all the live action productions.
