New Simon Pegg Interview (Beware: Spoilers Ahead!)

Devon

The Nerdist interviewed Simon while on the set of "Beyond."

There are a couple of spoilers but it's a great interview, as always, from Simon... enjoy!

From this and Lin's interview, it sounds like the setup of the film involves...
The Federation has expanded, made a treaty, etc., with someone who doesn't like what the Federation has done or feels they've gone too far and is pissed off. Hence the line in the trailer "The frontier pushes back."

I think this is a great interview! Pegg really understands the Trek fanbase especially, the part about how we like process details but not plot spoilers. This is smart marketing on the part of Bad Robot and seems to fit their previously established business model for keeping the cards close to the vest on the nature of the story. I think the its also a good move to put this out in the midst of Star Wars fever because, by this time most fan types have had their fill of news about Starwars. Folks are just ready to see the film so, some detailed info about the 50th anniversary Trek film is a great diversion. I think the teaser is a red herring so, all the haters can get there vitriol out early and out of the way. Expectations will be low but the film will be good. That's my prediction. What an awesome opportunity for Pegg to help create Beyond. It sounds like his process for breaking the story was really fun!

Great interview. I appreciate the point of view Pegg brings, and how Lin was involved in the writing process. It cleared up a lot of things for me in terms of the process of making the film.

Lots of good points there to unpack.

Excellent read. Pegg really had this one under control. This should inspire confidence in the film for anyone who was doubting it. There are also some hints about nods that we'll see:

1. The list of redshirts' names; Pegg said they still exist in this timeline.

2. The "object" about which they contacted Memory Alpha for details. What will it be?

Looking forward to the film!

I really love the dynamic between Bones and Spock, so that’s something we’ve kind of concentrated on a little bit with this one.

Aaaaaaaand... I'm sold.

Great interview. The setup of STB sound very cool. :bolian:

What a great interview. I'm glad that 'less Star Trek-y' thing was a misquote and cleared up. A lot of what he's saying is exactly what I want to hear as someone who's not a fan of the first two reboot films. But there's also a few bits that are disconcerting. Writing the thing when it's already in pre-production? Writing by committee and leaving some specifics of scenes and dialogue till later. That makes me cringe.

Great interview. It's easy to forget that Pegg is the guy who gave us the Gary King vs. The Network argument at the end of a The World's End, which is probably the most classic Trek thing I've seen on screen outside of Classic Trek. Let's hope he is able to bring that kind of vibe to Beyond.

The presence of Bob Orci et al in the writing credits of the trailer does make this bit rather baffling:

I never read Bob [Orci]’s script and neither did Doug [Jung]. We started out in a room at Bad Robot that’s just got white boards around the room, just blank white boards.
..........
N: Were there any elements from the previous script that stuck around because they’d already been designed in pre-production?

SP: Not at all. Maybe there were props that they were able to recycle. But because I hadn’t read it …

If Pegg says it'll be good, I believe him. I don't know why. He just seems like a guy who would keep his mouth shut rather than lie.

Pegg is a talented and clever writer.

As someone that disliked the previous two films, I still have some hope for STB despite the bad trailer. It's going to be action packed, which is very unappealing, but the simple fact that JJ isn't directing, and Orci is a non-factor, means we're going to get a more focused coherent story, and that's a good thing.

Orci et al are given writing credits purely because of guild rules.

I was under the impression that one had to contribute a certain percentage of material to the final draft - be it an idea, or lines of dialog, or what have you -- to qualify for credit. Is that not so?

I think it's just in the credits for the trailer because it hasn't gone through the...whatever process it is the guild uses to determine these things.

I love, love, love the setup of a deep space station that's set up by the Federation as a point of contact for new species. What a great idea!

It's a port of call – home away from home – for diplomats, hustlers, entrepreneurs, and wanderers.

Humans and aliens, wrapped in two million, five hundred thousand tons of spinning metal . . . all alone in the night.

It can be a dangerous place, but it's our last best hope for peace.

BABYLON 5

:)

I've always liked Pegg. He's a cool guy, and one of those "ambassadors to nerdom." I was more than happy to know he was taking over writing because he's a great writer and I know he'll deliver in the character department. THis interview was very solid. I enjoyed it.
