I've read some comments that Anson Mount was really, really unhappy with his experience on the series. Particularly how long it took them to shoot the individual episodes compared to other projects with a similar number of episodes he's been involved in.

Without Mount, they can't do Discoprise.
Stop spreading stuff from Nerdidiotic and Smallcock. At every interview and every convention he's had nothing but good things to say about the cast, crew and the scripts he was given. He's been quite active on the convention circuit and he doesn't come across as a shill.

The Short Treks were filmed about 2 months after they wrapped the Discovery Season 2 shoot, if he had experienced such a horrible time, I doubt he would have agreed to return and film those. (And no, they weren't contracted for them with their initial contract; the Pike/Spock Short Treks were BECAUSE of fan reaction to Pike and Spock and they were asked about two weeks after the wrapping of S2 if they'd come back to do them.

At San Diego, Kurtzman asked the audience if they'd like a Pike series, after the cheers he smiled and said 'We'll see" or something along those lines.

Now he might have just been teasing, or it's possible they are considering it.

I think it's pretty unlikely they'll ever do a Pike series.

But I'll bet dollars to donuts they've tasked several people to write treatments for a direct-to-Access film.

*Maybe even with a potential 150ish theatre release.

Gotta say, other than the sets/production values, this could have been a fan film.

YMMV. :techman:
Are you really comparing two professional actors to the people who play in fan movies?

I am considered a fairly good amateur actor, but I wish I had a tenth of the skills that Peck and Romin showed in this short.

I have seen many interviews with Anson Mount and the impression that I have is that he had a great time playing Pike and loves to do it again. But he had an issue being away from his family for a long period. So either they have to accommodate him schedule wise or pay him a lot money.

A little reminiscent of the first Short Trek, when Tilly magically beamed super-smart plot-device queen lady all the way back to her planet. (Which, yes, can be explained away with a few assumptions, but it'd be nice if they had someone telling them not to do dumb stuff in the first place.)

How so? It was a short trek. Including the assumptions in the dialogue would have been just plain silly.

Surely the audience can be expected to either get that if Po manages to get aboard even though the ship never ever went anywhere near Xahea, she can also get back without the ship (or its transporter beam) going to Xahea, too - or then not to care in the first place.

Why I'd take even a limited 6 episode series or even a "TV" movie or two would be cool.

Upthread, there's a reference to how would it be diff from TOS, and it's so close in time.

Exactly. Here's the chance to do a joyful, verve-ful episodic-with-arcs Trek show. A TOS for 2020.

Tie-in material's been doing that for years, though usually the reason was to avoid giving her a name. Even in a comic series which featured her as a cadet. They've just finally made it canon with Disco and Short Trek.

Don't you know, according to Trekkies, the very text book definition of compelling entertainment is to have everyone sit around the briefing room table with stacks of computer pads displaying detailed starship schematics and droning on an Treknobabble about how and why something is or isn't possible. You damn well better believe that if I were writing this it would be about the Enterprise's engineering staff going through the options and reviewing them at length and in depth for the 45 minute length of a proper episode before ultimately beaming Spock and Number One out of the turbolift. And all the True Fans would love it and demand I be given the Keys to the Franchise, so that I can remold Star Trek in my vision. ;)

The only thing established about when Chekov transferred aboard the Enterprise is that it was likely after Mudd's Women, given in I Mudd he had no idea who Harry Mudd was. He could still easily be aboard for Space Seed.
I just don't know.. nothing wrong with Trek characters at a conference table
90s Trek was glorious for its use of simple often two camera directing. I'd take the simplest 90s Trek scene over the most "exciting" discovery scene any day

Anson Mount and his wife first got married in early 2018. Live in Brooklyn. All is new since his last series ended. He has said there would have to be real discussions about the changes it would create in his life.

I dunno, this seems like an interim excuse to me, whether he was genuinely unhappy with some things behind the camera or they're just getting ducks in a row for the series. First, it's just normal if you're a serious actor to spend time apart from your spouse (and they dated for six years prior, meaning he must have been away in the past when Hell on Wheels and Inhumans were filming). Second, they don't have any kids yet. His wife (Darah Trang) is actually Canadian herself, and she works as a photographer - which is the kinda job which is pretty mobile.

Anyway, it's worth noting that Peck's public statements have been very different from Mount's - basically along the lines of "hellz yeah!" I don't think Romijn has been asked either way. I am sure given the fan petitions the network would like to find a way to make Discoprise work, even if it can't be fit in the schedule for awhile. So if it's not happening, it's not happening because Mount doesn't want it.

Is there a transcript of the short somewhere already? Nuances, nuances... Pike is a fighting captain before Burnham's War - so Starfleet isn't suffering from lack of recent conflict, just from lack of Klingon attentions specifically. I wonder what wars we missed.

Not me. I can barely get through TNG, despite a genuine and concerted effort to do a full re-watch. It just isn't dynamic or interesting enough to hold my attention.

8/10. 2 points lost due to the singing! I did like that it was the one from INS though. Some nice toughes, like shouty Spock and the smile. I love Number One.

I wish that they could cast someone with a decent Scottish accent if that was what they were trying to get with the female engineer on the intercom.

It was nice that this episode just dropped, and we don't need to wait until Xmas.

Old School isn't what it used to be.

Why do people keep mentioning Insurrection?

The use of the song had nothing to do with Insurrection and everything to do with what Number One was trying to teach Spock.

Minor quibble: Number One talks in this Trek of a Pike who's a seasoned combat veteran and well known for it. This short takes place before the Cage. Yet the start of the Cage and Pike's talk with Boyce clearly shows a guy who's still having trouble about casualties over the recent Rigel mission. Not that I'd ever expect him to get used to it, but it didn't seem like he'd have the full breakdown he'd have if he had the record the short indicates.
