Spoilers New Short Trek - Q&A

How Would You Rate This Short?

last year's "season" of short treks began with what was arguably the weakest installment ("runaway"), i wonder if the same will hold trust this year.

I think they're grouped thematically this time around: The next one coming out on Thursday is almost certainly the Pike tribble episode. Then the November one is likely the third Pike short. We've already had it confirmed that both the December Short Treks are animated. This leaves the January one - which premiers two weeks before Picard - as the almost certain Picard prequel.

Spock singing?

Singing pops up in almost all Trek. TOS had Uhura singing in CharlieX and some of the early episodes. Spock as pictured above.

TNG had more musical stuff than singing (Picard's flute, Ricard's trombone, Data doing classical) but there was some (Data & Picard). Beverly even tap danced.

Voyager had Picardo & Ryan sing.

Cannot remember DS9, but all those holodek trips with Vic had someone croon, yes?

Anyway, I thought the episode was nice and do not really give a fig about the wig or the turbolift. What was nice was two characters who are traditionally portrayed as logical & cold showing more depth in each other's presence.

Spock has had these chances before in every iteration. We know he HAS feelings. Vulcan's have them. Plus he's half human. He just had to suppress them them to blend in on Vulcan. Even more so than Vulcan's do.

As for Number One, it gives her character some depth. You know what a cold, calculating, distant character is? Boring.
The character revealed next to nothing in the Cage and precious little more in Disco S2 other than showing initiative & liking spicey food.

In 15 minutes (screen time) she goes fron cold towards Spock ("no need to shout") to recognizing a kindred intellectual spirit via his questions. So much so she opens up to him, and he reciprocates.

The two (outwardly) distant characters bonding with each other, and discovering (along with us) that exterior facade was exactly that, was cool.

The execution wasn't flawless but good enough. Augers strongly for a Pike series in my view. No real wasted stuff in the previous 4 Short Treks. Wait, was there a Mudd episode in S2?

Need someone(s) with sharper hearing. Why Una is at the turbolift top trying to repair it, Spock asks her about a binary Delta Scuti star. She responds 99 Pegasi. Is this dialogue correct?

Memory Alpha now has that down as "a triple-mode, high-amplitude Delta Scuti". Hard to tell if that's "correct" since 99 Pegasi is fictional... A quick googling reveals no DS variables in Pegasus ITRW.

EDIT: Belay that. GX Pegasi is a DS variable, 408 ly from Earth.

i'm real curious how memory-alpha is going to turn itself into a pretzel to explain away all the visual discontinuities.
They really don't, they just treat it as an art change.

They do label pictures from DSC as being from specifically that year though. Which I guess is true in universe.

The ship exterior changes however, are labelled as a refit. And they treat that info screen using the Franz Joesph tech manual numbers as 'canon'. So the Enterprise is still listed as 288 meters long.

You must of seen good and bad to give it a 6. I only saw bad. Therfore you saw more than I did!

As big of a critic as I am, a 1 means there was nothing worthwhile about it.

so..the etnerprise beamed spock aboard.. they get stuck in an elevator.. for HOURS.. and they don't think to beam them to the cafeteria

?

Intraship beaming is dangerous, except when it isn’t. ;)

Much like Runaway in the first "season" of Short Treks, this did feel more like the B plot of a traditional Trek episode than a true short.

Runaway was pretty important in retrospect, yes? The Mudd one was much more superfluous, though it did not feel like it at the time.

You seem to hate all new Trek.
I don't understand hate watching.
Your timing is off. In this case, I watched it, then I hated it. If you dont watch it, how can one know if you like it or not? So far I like everything that Ive seen about the new Picard series. So No I dont hate all new Trek! Look if people dont want to hear answers. Dont ask the questions.

I definitely didn't just see this, but if I had I'd say it was a cute little fluff piece. I wasn't expecting to see such a strong connection between Spock and Una by the end.

If I had seen it.

9. "10" would have been achieved if it was normal episode length instead of 15 minutes long.

I didn't even bother to quantify it. Utterly light-weight, but I liked it a lot.

7.5? Yeah, I just unintentionally split the difference between your scores, but there I am. :p

For the poll, I'll round up.

Honestly I'd rather have a Short Trek between Number One and Spock in the aftermath of the Menagerie, not this.
