New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 2017

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

Is it true that CBS basically has a policy of ignoring the Abramsverse? I recall something about them considering Romulus & old Spock to be not blown up/missing in the prime universe. It makes sense, since there is no benefit to having the Romulans essentially removed from the universe outside of the reboot movies.

I'm hoping for post TNG era with transwarp, personally.

I hope they stick to the prime universe too without blowing up Romulus but not to get off track didn't the Klingon's home-world get destroyed and they still survived as a major power?

I've been trying to hunt down # of subscribers to CBS All Access with little luck. Current rate is $5.99/month.

Getting a specific number for All-Access subscribers might be tough because, from what I understand, the number increases over the summer with the reality TV fans subscribing to the service to get access to the 24/7 "Big Brother" live feeds, and those fans canceling their subscriptions in the fall when the BB season ends.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

Honestly, I'm most excited because they have a chance to learn from past mistakes and put together a really good writing crew, maybe some SF writers, and to push some limits. Plus if it's streaming, it may be 15 episodes or less, so the stories can be focused on with less filler or last minute stop-gap measures.

Yay! Exciting news!

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

You know what's funny? Back in 2006 when Enterprise was getting cancelled most of the fans trying to save it advocated hard for crowd-funding the show. The concept was too nascent at that time for the television executives to take it seriously, but 10 years later that's EXACTLY what we're getting.

Now it really IS in the control of the fans. Die-hard fans can literally pay for the show. Which, makes me think, God forbid that the show is in danger of cancellation, can we sign up for multiple subscriptions to artificially inflate the numbers? Will there be a guy paying $120.00 a month in subscription cost and streaming Star Trek on 20 different tabs of Chrome? I can see it already.

No, I don't see that happening. Nor is this crowding funding. It's a subscription service for content.

While I'm naturally excited, I'm also worried. In the past two years sci-fi had one huge, new trend, namely astro-fi or astronaut sci-fi. Movies such as Gravity, Interstellar and The Martian have given rise to a growth in popularity of near-future sci-fi stories. With that in mind, I've got this gnawing feeling in the back of my head that these series might be a NASA-Trek. Exploration of nearby starsystems with an alcubierre driven vessel and a cast concisting of an essential crew, lacking redshirts because of the limited size such a ship would have.

Ofcourse my hopes are that it'll be a TOS era series or TNG era series, but I'm wary that it might be a very different kind of Trek from what we are used to, which no doubt might cash in where the trend is hottest, in the near-future sci-fi genre.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

I've heard a lot of people say it had better be in the Prime Universe. I agree.

All I can say is that people had better start making an F load of noise NOW. If you wait until the details are announced, it's too late.

It may not even be possible now because I guarantee you they are thinking of the movie universe. It's not even a question in *their* minds because they've worked to create the movie universe.

But, if you make a lot of noise now, maybe, just maybe it can be set in the Prime Universe. Interestingly they didn't say, which speaks volumes.

Mr Awe
LOL, scream all you want. They're going to make what they think will work. Not what a few fans cry about.

Who's screaming or crying?

Mr Awe

An "F load of noise"?

1. Who will be "The Powers That Be?"

3. Which era of Star Trek will it be set in? Prime timeline, JJ-Timeline, Next Generation Era? Prequel? Thousands of years later? There's merits and drawbacks to each.

4. Per episode budget? It should have a high budget for effects like Agents of Shield, Daredevil and Supergirl. That puts it in the $3-4 million dollar range. These days a genre series lasts about 18-20 episodes per season. Would Star Trek work better over a long season or as a limited run serial with 12 episodes?

5. How far into multimedia will this series reach? It finally seems like CBS is actually doing something for the 50th Anniversary. A huge marketing campaign for the new show + the new film will put Star Trek back into the pop culture limelight. Will we see the expansive empire that JJ Abrams envisioned, but was disappointed to be denied when he signed on in 2008-- a vast, cohesive multimedia empire to include books, comics, animated series, video games, toys etc?

I like what Vox culture editor Todd VanDerWerff proposed: an anthology series like True Detective or Fargo. I think that would be a great idea, and would allow a way to explore more of the Trek universe. I doubt CBS goes that way but it'd be great to explore. (Like, the Bryan Fuller or Ron Moore seasons Todd throws out? I'd die to see those.) You could jump timelines, quadrants, ships, etc and get to do a deep dive every season into what is out in the vast galaxy. I think it would be a lot of fun. Though potentially expensive with needing new sets every year.

Which is a good transition into budget. I'm a little scared on this front. Sure, CBS can front it as a corporation, but what happens when CBSAA doesn't hit its sub goal? What else are they going to push in terms of exclusive content to get people on board? Even with access to the back catalog of their current shows (which some of the big guns are available elsewhere) does it really keep subscribers? Especially considering the shows skew older? A lot of questions right now, and it will be interesting to watch this play out.

As far the sandbox, as much as I enjoy the MCU, I don't know if I want to see the two be too reliant on each other. It's one of the issues I have with SHIELD--they get caught spinning their wheels waiting for the movies to introduce the next big plot point. I don't mind a shared universe but I don't want the tv show to be dependent on the movies for major plot points.

Marketing campaign....
I wonder if the episode 1 (pilot) will be ready by San Diego ComicCon 2017 and they play a long trailer there or at the 2017 Vegas Trek convention or at least 10 minutes of it?
It sounds like this is greenlit straight-to-series order.
I'd like to see them start teasing it out in July 2016 after the Trek film finishes 4-6 weeks run at cinemas. Teaser trailers on the net and then during Sci-Fi related TV series on CBS.
I guess the season 1 Blu-ray will be released November 2017.

Re: New Series Official Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins Januar

The exclusive streaming thing seems more like an attempt to draw attention to their service now to try to build an audience on the platform. If it fails to take off by the time the show premieres I am very doubtful they'll hold to that plan.

Voyager was also the studio's way of trying to get viewers to tune into UPN. Don't forget, it was the flagship series that launched the network back in 1995.

Enterprise was also on UPN.

That was Enterprise that was on UPN.

Both were on it. Voyager launched the network, but UPN slowly moved away from programming similar shows, and by the time Enterprise came around it stuck out like a sore thumb.

Yes, Enterprise was on UPN, BUT, Voyager was the Flagship Series, that launched UPN in 1995...

Another question of budget...will the show use a lot of virtual sets to save money like Blood and Chrome?

Wouldn't surprise me, and I'm kind of dreading it.

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

One big issue is that this new Trek is US only. That means there will be a lot of downloading of the show by people outside the US. I also think this is a really bad idea to use Trek to blackmail people to pay for CBS All Access.

Nope. Star Trek Online is CBS and it acknowledges the destruction of Romulus. Everything else in the rebooted universe are ignored, but the final events leading up to the split are included.

Darn well I'm still going to hold out hope

You mean Praxis in STVI? That was just a moon. I guess there can still be Romulans scattered around like an angrier version of the El-Aurians.

Of course this is all a moot point unless it's a prime-universe show, post TNG.

It isn't US only... It will only be available on CBS all access in the US... It will be available in other markets on more conventional means if someone wants to buy and air it...

Alex Kurtzman actually is a player for scripted network television, I seriously doubt he would put together some little budget Atar Trek Series that may hinder other projects he has....

Re: New Series Announcement from StarTrek.com - Begins January 17, 201

I'm about to faint with this news, but this part makes me very nervous:

"while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966."

That sounds an awful lot like preachy, politically correct TNG plots. I know for some people that's what Star Trek should be. But personally I find it annoying.
