New police shows this week

Personally I am looking forward to two police shows which are pretty contrasting. The first is "The Unusuals" on ABC which premieres tomorrow or Wednesday night. It's about a quirky detective unit in the NYPD.

The second is "Southland" about a LAPD rookie on Thursday night on NBC at 10pm.

I'll be watching the Unusuals... mainly because in the hour after LOST airs I'm so busy posting here about it I can't watch anything and pay attention to it :p But I'm curious to see it, it looks like a NYPD Blue with more of an emphasis on comedy. And it's got Michael from LOST and that girl from Joan of Arcadia and The Ring. And, I believe, Angel's evil offspring from S1 "Somnanbulist"?

Nahh, I've got enough with L&O and my new favorite, Flashpoint. Go, Toronto SWAT!

Mark <--- Oh, Canada!

I saw the Unusuals pilot a few months ago--it's good. Quirky and different, but the characters are good and the cast top-notch. Unfortunately it's been scheduled against CSI: NY :p so I'll have to check it out online if I have time.

I'm curious about Southland--I've heard good things about it!

Southland comes from the producers of ER, so I think we know what to expect.

Instead of doctors, there will be a bunch of young and heroic but flawed police officers. They strive to be as professional as possible, but fail to avoid getting too wrapped up in the lives of strangers they encounter everyday. I'm guessing they'll also frequently find themselves demoralized by a criminal justice system that brings no justice to victims of crime. There were similar elements in ER, where the doctors frequently had to fight disease and bureaucracy at the same time

So should we watch Southland? Probably not. It's cops, not doctors and yet it promises to be depressing and all too familiar. Maybe it's time to sample whatever is on the other channels.

Same here. The wife has a thing about CSI, while I do other cop shows then L&O. Her turn on CSi nights.

I watched the beginning of The Unusuals for Amber Tamblyn's chest, so I stopped like 8 minutes into it after she changed clothes.

Hmm I have to say I was dissapointed in Southland. Action was good, but I thought the crimes were rather simplistic in nature. That, however, could usually be the case.

The Unusuals wasn't very good. The lead female is a terrible actress, and the lead male wasn't much better.

There was a lot of "Hey! Look how quirky I'm being!!!" going on.

Feh.

Joe, not impressed

It looks more like Hill Street Blues without the comedy but played documentary Cops and Adam-12 mix. In Hill St. from the pilot you would have thought it was the Hill and Renko show.
