New plot element confirmed by Trekmovie (Spoiler)

Jon1701

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Linky

Seems we are gonna see the Kobyashi Maru sequence after all. I'm still undecided as to whether this will be a good thing or not.

Like most things like this, its never going to be how you imagined it in your head...

Well, we *know* how it will turn out. Kirk pretty much spelled it out in ST II: He reprogrammed the simulation..

Although we will probably have to see it at least twice - one before he cheats, the other one after - so we can see *why* he does it.

I guess one way to do that would be to start and end the film with each sequence -- the previously by-the-book Kirk having learnt that you sometimes can and must rewrite the rules.

That is interesting but how Kirk did resolve KM test will be someone different then in TWOK i think.
p.s. AC Milan sucks and Juve rules Daedalus12
:D

A script kiddie is someone who is inept at hacking computer systems so he or she requires software written by others in order to hack computers.

Top reason to be a bianconeri. Courtesy of drucurl.

Juve is like Robin Hood; robin hood stole from the rich to give to the poor; Juve stole two titles from Milan and gave them to Inter. :D

Another tidbit supporting my long-standing assertion that this film will not be a typically-structured "episode" but will span Jim Kirk's life, hitting most of the "highlights" that support Old Spock's narrative.

There are really only two choices now:

1) Totally ignoring both established continuity and basic REALISM by having the TOS crew together from their teens 'til their 60s.

2) A film that takes place over a series of different time frames (including, at the very least, Lieutenant Kirk's time at Command School, and his time as Captain of the Enterprise during the first 5-year-mission.

If it turns out to be the first option (and I'm personally 100% convinced that it won't, though I have no information which I can share to convince the rest of you at this point!)... the film will suck and I'll see it once and then immediately flush it from my memory.

If it turns out to be the SECOND option (and that's consistent with what I've seen, and said, all along)... then I think the film is going to be great.

Time will tell, huh?

Yeah, it seems time is the true "final frontier."

I've never minded time travel episodes like other people have... and I have always had a soft spot for people meeting their younger selves. I liked how Journeyman got the "what if he runs into himself" question out of the way quick.

Was really hoping that time travel wouldn't play a role in this film... it's become too gimmicky in Trek and I'd like something a little more traditional.

If it were done well. (TM)

Hackers, starring Johnny Lee Miller and Angelina Joli, would be an excellent template for these scenes.

There's plenty of wiggle room, as in TWOK, it's never said exactly "how" Kirk reprogrammed the simulation...

It might have been done in a manner that isn't what we think of as hacking.... he could have reprogrammed it by his actions, such as unorthodox manoeuvres, false messages, etc. Or, he may have found a "back door" of sorts, an "Easter Egg" if you will, that allowed him to manipulate the program in real time.

IN any event, the KM test doesn't come during academy days, as Lt. Saavik shows. She's already in the field, she's coming back for her Command-level exam, in exactly the same manner we see Deanna Troi do in TNG.

So it need not take us back to Academy-era Kirk....

BTW, wasn't the KM test near the Romulan Neutral Zone? Hmmmm, could be how and why we're seeing Romulans.

^^ Actually, it was near the Klingon neutral zone.

And I think it's pretty clear how Kirk could have reprogrammed the simulation. He slept with the programmer....

Wee! We get to see how he cheated the "no win" test! I always wondered exactly how he reprogrammed the simulation so he could win. I mean, isn't just knowing he did it enough? Man, it's a borderline fanboy scene.

Unless it's vital to the plot. (TM)

Well, we know from TOS that Kirk doesn't rewrite computers' programming the traditional way, he actually talks them into destroying themselves!

Look, you guys are having a LOT of fun making fun of this concept, but there have been LOTS of movies telling this sort of thing. Nobody wants to spend fifteen minutes watching someone type (or whatever). But c'mon... that's not what we're talking about here. We might see a bit of "Mission Impossible" as he sneaks into the secured computer lab... we might see a bit of "Oceans Eleven" (or more appropriately, the "Superman III" bit from Office Space?) as he comes up with the idea... I mean, it's a minor thing, but the trick is that the COMING UP with the idea and the sneaking in to swap the program chips could be a pretty exciting little sequence. Albeit just a "character building" part of the film (showing the non-Trek-inclined just who this Kirk guy really is... someone who really, REALLY hates losing!), and not necessarily a core plot element.

Is it really that hard to see how this could be interesting to anyone but an uber-fanboy? If you can't see how this could be a cool character point for the film, you must never watch any NON-trek entertainment...
