New music clips

Very nice. The use of the original music in the end-credits sequence is beautiful.

Holy fuckin' shit that was awesome! Just the end credit music I want at the end of a Star Trek movie! That Jerry Goldsmith TMP shit was getting so stale I flinch every time I hear it anymore. By the end Goldsmith was almost as one note as Horner. But this! This was beautiful!

To be fair, I really like the Goldsmith TMP music and find it inspiring, if not beautiful in it's own right. The overture is magnificent. The actual theme part of it is a little too brash at times, but the real problem with it is it was overused. I mean really, really overused.

It's ok in TMP where it has all the bells and whistles, but when it's reused in all the other Trek movies and on TNG it seems smaller, less grand.

You know what? You're right. The first time I heard the TMP score was in December of 1986. I'd seen Treks 2-4 but I'd always avoided TMP because according to my dad: "That's the one that sucks!" :guffaw:The man has no taste. He once described TVH as: "Superb." I mean it's a fun movie and all but, "superb"? I mean... Really?

Anway the first time I stuck that record in the player and that grand theme came on loaded with pomp and circumstance and raw fuckin' brute strength... I was floored. If I'd had a cannon I'd have fired it. If I'd had a flad I'd have saluted it. It was one hell of a theme. Don't get me wrong I thought Ilia's Theme beat the Main Theme bloody and I even prefer the Klingon Theme to it (at least I did until Goldsmith ruined it by turning it into Worf's Theme) but I admired the hell out of it.

Didn't even mind it's usage on TNG or TFF but... He Hornered it. I can't listen to it anymore because...

I'm completely fucking sick to death of it.

You know, all this talk of previous scores reminded me of something. First off, I love The Courage fanfare, and the statements of "The Theme" heard in the films, but in its original context, I am not as big a fan of the TOS theme as I am of Goldsmith's theme. I love it, don't get me wrong, but I'm a TNG baby. I grew up with TNG on TV, and that was the Star Trek theme for me. The Courage Fanfare plus the Goldsmith Theme nail it for me.

When I went to see Star trek: First Contact, I was 11 years old. I'd already been a big Trek fan for four or five years, and though I had enjoyed Generations when it first came out, something kept me from thinking of it as a bonafide Star Trek movie. (I would later discover that it was mainly due to the fact that it was trying to be a great episode of the show, and not so much as a Feature film.) When the fanfare started FC, I immediately felt like I was watching a Star Trek movie, and when the end credits began, I got giddy. I had just watched a real Star Trek movie, with the theme and everything! It like a signature. And the fanfare is absolutely necessary.

I like Michael Giacchino's work. I really like what I'm hearing so far, too. The new theme is good, though I don't think it quite has that signature feel, but its way too early to even try to judge. That being said, I like it a lot. It definitely brought a smile to my face when I first heard that great big statement in the clip.

The Straightforward adaptation of the Courage theme for the end credits is a wonderful performance, but I think it kinda shows its age, especially in the context of this new film. I wish Giacchino had done something a little more eloquent or unique with it. Hopefully we get to hear some more modern, lyrical interpretations in the film a la TMP, TSFS or TVH.

All of this sounds very nice.

If Enterprising Young Men is the reveal of the Enterprise, I might cry haha.

That sample of "run and shoot offense" gives me subtle call backs to both Horner's TWOK score as well as the Fight music from Amok Time....

Nero sighted sample reminds me a little of the TMP score's Klingon theme a little as well as TUC's score...

Overall from the first clips and these new clips I've noticed both that he has injected a choir into the mix which is nice, I think TUC and GEN were the only ones of the franchise to do that outside of the TOS theme. I've also noticed that his use of the hornes in the score seems to carry that "swinging jazz" sound that the TOS score used at the time, but without as much cheese to it. If that makes sense.

Please can someone tell me if the Goldsmith opening is present, or any of the Goldsmith Enterprise theme.

I pray it uses the usual brass fanfare.

The music I've heard so far is wonderful. I've never been a huge fan of the original fanfare but I liked the way Giacchino worked it into his own main theme for the movie during the end credits.

Why am I picturing all the kiddies who came for the sex and violence running out of the theater with their ears covered once the credits start?

No idea at all. It doesn't make any sense.

Sure it does. Either they'll have run out by then, or their fathers will be exiting. After all, it won't be Star Trek for both groups. ;)

On thread:
The fanfare better be in some piece somewhere in the movie, or since I can't boycott by then, I'm asking for a refund.

But, playing the old theme without the fanfare is like leaving the gravy off of the mashed potatoes.

Exactly - it's comfort food.

I'd rather that this score sound something like Giachinno's work on "The Incredibles" than that it contain a single recognizable Trek element. As it is, we appear to be getting some compromise with tradition.

I suspect the only theme from elsewhere in Star Trek in the score would be the Original Theme, and the TOS fanfare piece from the "Space, The Final Frontier .." monologue before the credits.

It appears that the rest of the score consists mainly of the new theme Giacchino created, along with his trademark bombast and percussion, and a dark theme for Nero.

I liked how in the Cinemusic End Credits clip, after the TOS theme has completed, and it goes into this other theme briefly (I think Nero's), then goes into Giacchino's Trek Theme, we hear the strings playing a stylized variant of the TOS theme as a countermelody.

My wife doesn't like the theme, though she thinks the score itself sounds good.

I, however, am really loving this. Now all I need is the soundtrack (pre-ordered upon pre-release at amazon), and I'll be happy for a while with the Repeat option in the car.

Which is fine with me. That approach works with The Incredibles, as it is a completely original creation. However, Trek has a long history, including a rich musical tradition. To discard that completely would be a mistake.

I listened to the available bits today. Enjoyed it very much. Must admit, with the strains of the original Courage theme, I felt my childhood rushing back to me and I got slightly misty.
