be nice if Apple could reduce the price along with the size and weight.
Just not going to happen, Apple managed to increase margins on Macs last year. They have no interest in ending up like HP, selling grey boxes for wafer-thin margins.

Again. Wow, aren't we condescending.Guartho said:Not so much what you mean, but what the words you're trying to use mean.
In that case I must apologize to you. I must have confused you with this poster:At no point did I say Apple will force people to use their AppStore, only that I wouldn't be surprised if that turned out to be the case.
Urgh! I really hate the appstore idea, mostly because it's Apple and they would just love to dictate what software you can install on your computer.
Kataaran said:So let me get this straight, you're mad that Apple is offering an online app store because your Dell doesn't have an optical drive?
More noise...
If you actually read the comments then you'd perhaps notice I was talking about the idea that an optical drive has no use these days.

as a response to a simple statement of fact.^ That's a neat trick you have of telling me what I mean, you must be so proud.
All of which could be done with an external drive.
Well sure, but you can say that for any component. Why have a large HDD, just put 16gb of flash in there and cart around an external HDD. Why have a built in keyboard, just buy a tablet with an external keyboard!
As I said before, the Pro models are targeted at power users and professionals. Buying a laptop in the first place means that you need portability (which external drives are not)

I'm a professional videographer, photographer, and video editor.
My field is pretty well-known for large file sizes but I only need an internal DVD drive once a week or so and it's always when I'm at my desk.
What kind of "power users and professional" users are you talking about? Kinda curious how other professions use their optical drives since mine is not a job that has much use for them anymore.
I suggest we stop this bickering, we're both looking like spanners.![]()

Agreed.. I think... What's a spanner? I always picture it as some kind of wrench.
^ Well when I installed OSX on my Dell netbook it would have been a lot less time consuming with an optical drive. I spent a lot of time mostly doing this![]()
As we approach the expected updates for the MacBook Pro line, we tend to start hearing about possible release dates. There are typically some false starts, so it's hard to be sure, but the first contender for this round appears to be March 1st. Danish blogger KennethLund.dk claims to have heard from a source in one of the major Danish Apple resellers that MacBook Pro models are on tight supply but that the newly updated models will arrive on March 1st. March 1st falls on a Tuesday which is typical for Apple's releases.
The MacBook Air has also never included a built-in optical drive in another effort to reduce weight and space.
I'm in the same business as you. We often get cuts received on dvd or - more commonly - people request DVDs of rough cuts, fine cuts, etc. My optical drive gets used quite a bit.

My optical drive also gets a lot of use...on my tower.
The one with the really powerful processors and massive fiber storage system attached to it. My laptop? Not so much.
That was my question to the other poster...what job needs an optical drive a lot but doesn't need high-end processors, video cards, and massive amounts of RAM and storage space? We were specifically talking about the usefulness of such a drive in a small portable system.
I absolutely need an optical drive. But as I said, I rarely need it when I'm away from the office. If I did live off a laptop alone I'd be more than happy to leave the optical drive sitting on my desk when I went outside.
