New Macbook Pros soon. Maybe.

be nice if Apple could reduce the price along with the size and weight.

Just not going to happen, Apple managed to increase margins on Macs last year. They have no interest in ending up like HP, selling grey boxes for wafer-thin margins.

Not so much what you mean, but what the words you're trying to use mean.
Again. Wow, aren't we condescending.

Look, if you're going to try to equate two things that just aren't that alike, you're going to get called on it.

At no point did I say Apple will force people to use their AppStore, only that I wouldn't be surprised if that turned out to be the case.
In that case I must apologize to you. I must have confused you with this poster:
Urgh! I really hate the appstore idea, mostly because it's Apple and they would just love to dictate what software you can install on your computer.

So let me get this straight, you're mad that Apple is offering an online app store because your Dell doesn't have an optical drive?

More noise...

If you actually read the comments then you'd perhaps notice I was talking about the idea that an optical drive has no use these days.

...which is a direct tangent of that other poster's contention that Apple would just love to dictate what software one can install on one's computer.

BTW, editing the actual content of other user's quotes is against the rules in all of the TrekBBS forums save the Neutral Zone. Holdy etc., I apologize for mini-modding, but I thought it'd be classier than actually notifying on something tiny.

There you go, I've highlighted the relevant bits to help you out, notice I said 'would love to' not 'this is definitely what they're planning'.

What now? Who's the one trying to link two completely different comments to support your... well, whatever you're trying to say.

What I'm trying to say is that what you're worried about happening is never going to happen so stop worrying. What now? What do you mean what now? Well, we can wait and see or you can keep saying I'm a jerk for trying to ease your mind and then not being very patient with posts like this
^ That's a neat trick you have of telling me what I mean, you must be so proud.
as a response to a simple statement of fact.

^ that comment was in response to your reply were you were telling me what i was trying to talk about. It was condescending and you did it again in the next post. That kind of thing rubs me up the wrong way. I was giving back what I got.

Fair enough that your opinion is there's nothing to worry about. I tend to be suspicious of large tech companies pulling dick moves to protect their interest rather than do what's best for their users.

I suggest we stop this bickering, we're both looking like spanners. :p

All of which could be done with an external drive.

Well sure, but you can say that for any component. Why have a large HDD, just put 16gb of flash in there and cart around an external HDD. Why have a built in keyboard, just buy a tablet with an external keyboard!

As I said before, the Pro models are targeted at power users and professionals. Buying a laptop in the first place means that you need portability (which external drives are not)

I'm a professional videographer, photographer, and video editor.

My field is pretty well-known for large file sizes but I only need an internal DVD drive once a week or so and it's always when I'm at my desk.

What kind of "power users and professional" users are you talking about? Kinda curious how other professions use their optical drives since mine is not a job that has much use for them anymore.

I'm in the same business as you. We often get cuts received on dvd or - more commonly - people request DVDs of rough cuts, fine cuts, etc. My optical drive gets used quite a bit.

Since I'm now moving into 3D production people are requesting full rez blu-ray copies of edits, hence my earlier post about wanting an internal blu-ray drive.

I too am in Video Production, I no longer provide Rough Cuts or the like on DVD. I give them links to download from online, if they want to burn DVD's have at it. However finished product is a different story, I will provide finish product on DVD if requested. I haven't got request for Blu-Ray authoring yet, but I know it is coming. I'm currently looking at Blu-Ray burners as we speak. I can't hold out for Apple to add or sell a Blu-Ray burner anytime soon.

I use an LG external burner and it's fine, but clumsy if I have to travel with it, hence my desire for an internal.

Am finding it hard to source blank BD-Rs though. New Zealand hasn't really dived into the market yet. We're constantly having to look at Australia for bulk orders.

^ Well when I installed OSX on my Dell netbook it would have been a lot less time consuming with an optical drive. I spent a lot of time mostly doing this :brickwall:

I agree that there are definitely still uses for optical drives. I bought a new printer recently, and if my computer didn't have an optical drive, I would have had no way to install the printer software, which came on a CD.

Yes, I could go out and buy an external optical drive, but I don't think that I should have to. CDs and DVDs are still common enough that it's good to have the drive available.

Looks like March 11th for the new Macbook Pros. I don't think it will be total redesign, just some upgrades and tweaks.

Apparent processor upgrades will be:

Core i7-2620M(2.70GHz)
Core i5-2540M(2.60GHz)
Core i5-2520M(2.50GHz)
Core i5-2410M(2.30GHz)
Core i3-2310M(2.10GHz)

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/07...cbook-pro-release-date-as-supplies-constrain/

I'm guessing the 13" will be an i3. Then again, the lowest i5 is listed as 2.3GHz, which is below what we currently have, although I don't know much about this Sandy Bridge architecture; it could be a different scale. The 13" may get an i5 too.

C'mon 1TB HDD and 8GB RAM.... :D

Were getting close because Apple is quoting 4-6 weeks on Macbook Pro replacement, probably because production has slows down on current model.

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/12/march-1st-as-possible-date-for-new-macbook-pros/

As we approach the expected updates for the MacBook Pro line, we tend to start hearing about possible release dates. There are typically some false starts, so it's hard to be sure, but the first contender for this round appears to be March 1st. Danish blogger KennethLund.dk claims to have heard from a source in one of the major Danish Apple resellers that MacBook Pro models are on tight supply but that the newly updated models will arrive on March 1st. March 1st falls on a Tuesday which is typical for Apple's releases.

Two weeks away?

I'm also a little worried about this:

The MacBook Air has also never included a built-in optical drive in another effort to reduce weight and space.

I still use my optical drive quite a bit. I think it would be prudent of Apple to leave it in for at least another couple of years.

Still, if they did ditch it then I hope they replace it with a second hard drive option so you can have the option of twice the capacity or a RAID option.

My optical drive also gets a lot of use...on my tower.

The one with the really powerful processors and massive fiber storage system attached to it. My laptop? Not so much.

That was my question to the other poster...what job needs an optical drive a lot but doesn't need high-end processors, video cards, and massive amounts of RAM and storage space? We were specifically talking about the usefulness of such a drive in a small portable system.

I absolutely need an optical drive. But as I said, I rarely need it when I'm away from the office. If I did live off a laptop alone I'd be more than happy to leave the optical drive sitting on my desk when I went outside.

I only have one machine, so I kinda need it at home and at work. :)
