New Look Daleks Revealed

Utter disgrace. We've had the Special Weapons Dalek, now here's the Special Needs Dalek.

I mean, what moron thought sticking the cheap dashboard from a 1992 Corsa around the middle would be an improvement? As Moffat would say, they should be clubbing these guys to death. If they want to change the Daleks from the RTD era, then how about writing them a decent episode instead? My only objection to the previous design was that they were all in chavbling gold. They've gone from looking like tanks to looking like cheap toys.

Nothing creative like that, unfortunately. As far as I can see, episode-centric "wallpapers" are just stills from the ep.

I have no problem with them throwing a little enamel on themselves. It's not like they rely on camouflage or subtlety to get the job done anyway, and bright colors are often used in the military to distinguish specific positions and purposes.

No one seemed to mind it in Star Trek, and aircraft carriers seem to do their job just fine despite the fact, too.

Well everyone complained about the new look TARDIS when the first set photos came out, but it does look very different on screen, so it'll be interesting to see how these new Daleks look within the confines of the episode on Saturday, and I guess we'll see how many of them there are involved then as well (given that we know the old gold ones are still around, plus the khaki ones).

Moffat really does seem to have a real affection for the Cushing films, so technicolour Daleks doesn't surprise me.

I don't have a problem even with the shopped colours on the RT cover- it's the shape. The neck and head are too small compared to the body, and the centre of gravity is further forward, so, instead of looking like it sitting there solid and you won't get past it, it looks like it's permanently teetering forward. The higher but narrower base and hunched back only accentuates this.

You know that Monty Python animation where an old lady sticks out her foot to trip up a bus? This new Dalek looks like you could actually do that to the prop and it'd go head over whatever passes for heels on a Dalek.

You realize that the photo of the Dalek on the cover was shot at an skewed angle, right? Of course the head looks small; it's in the distance compared to the lower and mid sections. Hence it looking down in order to look straight at the camera.

We saw the general shape in the preview for next week. It's proportions were far more normal...

There are pictures from several angles on the Radio Times website - it still comes over as a pinheaded hunchback tottering along...

I have no problem with them as long as:

Yellow Daleks = Command
Red Daleks = Engineering / Security
Bule Daleks = Science / Medical

Dalek Ricky always hated being picked to be the 4th on the landing party.

Dalek Sec, Dalek Caan, Dalek Thay and Dalek Ricky beam down to Gallifrey. Guess who's not coming back...

I haven't even discovered wallpapers for the new series on the BBC page, yet. There's just galleries with some pictures of the episodes.

There's a sad lack of decent DW wallpapers out there.

As for the new look Daleks and colours... I don't like the look or the colours on the Radio Times site. They look too much like kids toys in bright primary colours and too little like anything to fear. But maybe that's part of their plan...

It's not the colors that bother me as much as the texture. Sure, it probably makes more sense for the Daleks to be some kind of plastic or composite than it does for them to be metal, but metal is just more threatening.

It reminds me of the Schumacher treatment that was given to Batman in those couple of films in the 1990s. The Dalek's you've just seen are not just promotional photoshop'd images for the magazine, they actually will appear in the episode as confirmed by this image:
