With the casting of Paul Wesley as James Kirk, and the premiere of Strange New Worlds just weeks away, If they were to do a new Kirk-focused series, where would you want it to be set? Would you want set during the Fifth year of the original Five-year mission? post-TMP pre-TWOK? or would you want to be set during his academy years?

Love to hear your thoughts.

I'd watch a Kirk series set anywhere post-academy where there's a gap in the timeline. I'd watch the adventures of Lieutenant Kirk, I'd watch post-TMP Kirk, I'd watch post-TFF Kirk.

They could technically do a TOS series set during the five year mission that didn't actually interfere with anything in TOS (like the novels and comics have been doing for decades), but I don't see that ever working on TV. Personally I'd have it start 5 minutes after the Motion Picture, with the first story being about a mysterious Starfleet uniform designer coming aboard and making the crew try out new uniforms...

Not sold that we should have yet another Kirk, but as we do, both of those are favourite periods for me. I'd do it as all one show over five seasons :

Season 1 - ToS Year 4
Season 2 - ToS Year 5 (introducing Arex and M'Ress ?)
Leave some "wiggle room" for TAS if it is still canon ?
Season 3 - Decommissioning and other events during refit leading up to TMP, mid season break then the immediate aftermath of TMP and 2nd 5 Year Mission starts.
Seasons 4 & 5 - more 2nd 5 Year Mission, crew rotate out leading towards TWOK.

And absolutely never, ever mention the bloody Starfleet Academy show that has been mooted every time they run out of ideas again.

Never. No. Just let it go...

My dream Kirk series picks up right after the Wrath of Khan and ignores everything after. Kirk's best friend is dead. He's commanding the USS Enterprise, now a cadet training ship, with Saavik and David as science officers.

I used to imagine Bruce Campbell would make a good Kirk in this era.

Controversial idea. I’d rather let SNW give Pike the spotlight

the 5YM has been done to death - video games (from the early 90s, with the original crew which you could animate) , comics, books—even two fan films series which were high profile involving some veterans from real Trek.

Academy shows just don’t interest me. Republic-era *could* work. Post series pre movie would be boring.

post TMP could be best in my opinion- the crew are not much older but it’s still uncharted territory. There’s wriggle room to develop the characters.

part of me still hopes they can do something with Shatner. Nexus series?! Older Kelvin Kirk. Animation?

Are they so devoid of fresh new ideas that they have to keep going back to all the previously established characters?
No, they are not. What they are doing is kowtowing to the fan base who demands familiar characters. Even if it isn't the majority, the past several seasons of DSC, and PIC Season 2 especially, demonstrate that what fans want is not new and fresh. They want safe, familiar, and to have their hands held through these episodes. So, new and challenging? Not a chance in hell that what is being expressed by the fans, vocal minority or not.

During a transporter accident, a duplicate Kirk ends up frozen in ice, only to be reanimated generations later. But instead of becoming the newest Alpha Quadrant avenger, Captain AmerKirka, he emerges from his icy slumber as Encino Kirk. He goes around smashing Gorns all day over the head with rocks, until he pulls the last rock out from under a bridge and suffers an anticlimactic fate, inevitably leading to more memes of "Captain on the bridge / Bridge on Captain."

IF they do a series about Kirk (which I would hope they would save until after SNW is over and done, however many seasons that might take) then I would be VERY interested in a post-TMP/pre-TWOK second five year mission-based series. The refit Enterprise from that era is still by far the greatest spacecraft design ever conceived, and depicts the Constitution-class at the peak of its design evolution. A series based on that ship, bridging the gap between two of the finest Star Trek movies ever made, would stand a huge chance of being successful. Why anyone would not be ecstatic at the thought is beyond me (then again, I am a HUGE fan of the classic movie era, especially The Motion Picture, and I've said elsewhere that we need as much 70's style Trek as possible).

My thoughts...

1. No to a 'new' TOS (Kirk) series. We've already had that show- it was TOS.

2. In the same vein, I don't understand why they went 'small universe' with SNW and peopled Pike's Enterprise with M'Benga, Chapel, and Uhura. The only three characters that needed to be there were Pike, Spock, and Number One. Now, once again, they are stifling their story opportunities with the other characters.

3. If we want to visit an area that is largely untouched, I like the post-TMP, pre-TWOK era mentioned above. NOT with Kirk and co. If you wanted a link to the old, set the show aboard another Constitution-refit class starship and make Sulu the XO. Alternatively, take a smaller ship from that era (Like a FASA Baker Class Destroyer or something) and make it Sulu's first command. After all, it's not reasonable to expect that they'd hand Excelsior over to someone who's never held the center seat, years later.

Or, take that idea and use ZERO original cast members in any way, shape, or for, which would probably be even better. In fact, we wouldn't even need to see a cast member or character from any other show- just be free and clear to do your own thing.
