Relationship, not romance.

And I'm not one of those "he shouldn't shag" group members; I simply feel it doesn't work in this show.

I, on the other hand, think that the show works best when it is a romance. For a comparison... It's like Aladdin: the Doctor is Aladdin and Genie mixed in one, the companion is Jasmine, and the TARDIS is their magic carpet ride. It just works better if there's a romance involved. The emotional stakes are higher, and the dramatic tension between the desire for intimacy that comes with romance and the Doctor's obsessive need to hide so many important aspects of himself is brought front and center.

That, and, well, sci-fi TV is missing well-written romances. Not adventure stories with hints of romance. Not military sci-fi epics with romantic subplots. An honest-to-goodness romance set against the backdrop of a magical machine that lets them explore time and space.

Well, if you read that other thread about the Vampires of Venice script excerpt, you'll see that romance is now out of the question...

.... what the hell, dude?

Thanks for the fucking spoiler warning.

Where's the spoiler there? I don't see one, or do you mean the episode title?

I didn't want to know the title, and I didn't want to know anything about the content -- including that "romance is now out of the question." Talking about it was just rude.

Yeah, but look at this way: you can enjoy it, knowing there's no possibility of another awful Doctor romance :)

Sci isn't complaining about the episode title...

Looks like he is actually, just look at the bolded bit below.

So it looks as if their might not be a possibility of a romance, I'm really rather happy with that.

Just a thought, looking at the title of this thread:

It's common sense to think that spoilers might come up or is it just me?

Interesting that the Doctor says "Trust me" in both trailers. I wonder if this will be a 'secondary catchphrase' in the same way, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." was.

Moff's a big fan of the Fifth Doctor, who was always having issues with people not taking him seriously due to his youthful appearance... maybe Eleven is having similar problems and has to keep reiterating the need for people to have faith in his judgement?

I felt the trailer was a bit underwhelming compared to the hype, but then that's the problem - with so little Who last year, we're all bursting for something glorious to grace our screens and yet this is a promo trailer - we got the big action "wow look at the monsters!" trailer at New Year... this is the equivalent of the "I'm looking for a guy with a lot of heart..." Martha trailer or the Donna Tales by the Fireside one... neither of which contained much more info or action than this.

Big Weird-looking Silurian Head is big and weird, though.

The trailer is appealing to the romantic side of joining the adventure of the Doctor. A lot of people are measuring a 1 minute trailer against the past 4 years worth of episodes and it's two Doctors. This will kick some serious ass. It's as exciting as ever. "Do you wanna come with me" a line made great by a great actor. Everywhere and anywhere, every star that ever was is a great chat up line to an audience.

The title is a secondary complaint -- the primary one being that I didn't want to know what would happen in upcoming episodes unless I chose to participate in a thread clearly marked "SPOILERS."

It's common sense to think that spoilers might come up or is it just me?

Why on Earth would it be reasonable to expect spoilers in a discussion about a promotional trailer that doesn't have the word "spoilers" in its title?

because trailers often contain spoilers to some extent?

Which is fair insofar as the content of the trailers themselves go. You'll notice that I'm not complaining about being spoiled at the idea of a Dalek or Weeping Angel appearing in the new season, since both appeared in the trailer.

But information was given, with no spoiler warning, abut something that was not in the trailer. Hence my objection.

Why on earth would it not be?

Yes it's a promotional trailer and not exactly the most revealing, but there are things contained with in it that some people may think are spoilers, if some one hadn't heard about the return of the Daleks or the Weeping Angels and they saw the trailer for the first time on Saturday on BBC One, that can surely be classed as a spoiler and may ruin the surprise of watching it on BBC One at around 19:00hrs on a Saturday evening.

So yes, even if spoiler was not in the title, Sci, I would have thought that you of all people would have had the inclination that things of a spoilerish nature would be discussed in this thread.

Anyway, I'm glad Ms Pond may or may not be getting married at somepoint in the series, means the Moffster won't be repeating the whole companion falling for The Doctor shite that Rusty did for Rose and Martha.

Because it's a thread without the word "spoiler" in the title about promotional trailer released to the general public, not a thread with a title indicating that it will be discussing events in a specific episode that were not depicted in the trailer.

And you'll notice I'm not complaining about the Daleks or the Weeping Angels -- I'm complaining that info never even alluded to in the trailer was spoiled.

I will say that this is a fair point.

You cannot assume that a thread will have spoilers. A thread's default setting should be "spoiler-free" unless indicated otherwise.

Well personally, I think you're getting your knickers well and truly in a twist over this. Yes it's a thread about a picture and then a trailer about the new series, it doesn't give that much away, Candlelight didn't give you any specifics about what was going to happen. This is what he said concerning the relationship between the Doctor and Ms Pond:

Well, if you read that other thread about the Vampires of Venice script excerpt, you'll see that romance is now out of the question...

The bolded part could mean a few things, she could be gay or he's not her type for some other reason and not be interested in the Doctor as she has a partner back on Earth or the like.

Just because you have some romanised idea that the companion must fall for The Doctor and that idea has been debunked by a somewhat vague statement by someone who has by their own admission not watched much Who after Last of the Time Lords back in 2007 does not make it a bloody spoiler.
