YAY!!!

"Godzilla" is coming back -- this time, with Legendary Pictures taking the lead, co-producing and co-financing with Warner Bros. for release in 2012.Legendary announced Monday it had obtained rights to the iconic monster character from Japan's Toho Co., which has overseen more than 25 "Godzilla" films. Toho will release the pic in Japan.
Legendary said it's planning to announce a director shortly.
In addition to Legendary, producers on the new film will be Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers. Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will exec produce.
"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."
Legendary noted the film will fall under its co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. Legendary's productions with Warners have included "The Dark Knight," "300" and "The Hangover."
Speculation about a new "Godzilla" has been active since last summer. The Bloody Disgusting web site reported in August that the project was in development.

If CGI, go back to the Classic Toho Godzilla. That was a change that didn't need to be made for the American version.

Here is an example of what the classic Godzilla looks like in CGI, from the Japanese movie "Always: Sunset on Third Street 2".

It looks like the CGI Godzilla has a little bit more freedom of movement, for example look at the head twitch he does at the end of the clip.

I don't see the problem of a CGI Godzilla, even one that doesn't look much like the various Toho designs; it just needs to be a good movie. That was the real fault of the American film, rather than fidelity to the source material.

And that clip reminds me that Akira Ifukube's theme would be appreciated in some capacity, were I to fanboy. That bit of music is 'Godzilla' to me as much as his roar.

I am so happy with the news! I love Godzilla movies from the Toho version and even the American version. I was mentioning this in the "where's the sequel thread"

I like the CGI Godzilla that Toho did in post #6, Along with a good story I hope we get a realistic animal like Godzilla that looks closer to the original version.

I remember when I first saw the American Godzilla. It was several years after it was released, it was on TV one day, I was bored, so I thought, what the hell. Anyway, when it got to the first time Godzilla was defeated, and I thought it was over. I thought, "what the hell has everyone been complaining about? That was pretty decent." Then they fight the baby Godzillas, which I thought was a bit derivative of Jurassic Park, but still had its entertainment value. Then Godzilla returned and they had to fight him all over again, and now I realized why everyone had been complaining all these years.

I actually thought the 2nd time they fought him was some of the best parts of the movie...very action packed. Even though I do like that movie I must admit the scenes with the baby Zillas goes on too long and slows the movie down and made it a little boring.

Personally, I just found Godzilla returning for a second showdown to be an example of folks not knowing when to end the film.

I'll be happy as long as 1) it's a period piece that 2) doesn't take place in North American and 3) ends up getting his ass handed to him by a giant butterfly.

That'll be a movie I'll pay to see at the cinema.

Works for me. That's the Big-G that I know and love.

Sounds good. I didn't really dislike the American version, but it didn't fell like Godzilla.

It was bad, but it didn't have a Godzillafeel at all. Godzilla also needs other cool monsters to fight with! Have you see the cartoon based on the 1998 version? It's really good!

I agree, modified is OK, but at least based on it. The USA version looks like Grandpazilla.

I love that clip so much, that's exactly what is needed. There is a direct sequel to the 50s Godzilla that throws out the 20 sequels that mixes CGI and a guy in a suit, it's really well done. I can never remember the name because it's insane, something like "Godzilla, Gordanama, Martha and King Blaha Gijo in an All Out Monster Melee". Awesome movie everyone should watch.

Americans fucked up Godzilla in every conceivable way. I have no faith that a second shot at making an American Godzilla flick will get it right. That said, the last one was so horrible that it goaded Toho into making more movies just to repair the damage, so it could be good news either way.

He does look good in that clip. The head twitch mentioned earlier, and the thrashing tail are more realistic.

That said, the "guy in the rubber suit" has always been part of the allure of the Toho flicks over the years. Even when the story wasn't so good and it was just good ol' cheesiness.

I hope to see this new movie in IMAX.

Also, this subject is going on here and here.

I didn't know about the first topic. Mine is in the correct place (sci-fi) and has a clearer title. :-p
