New Fuller Interview; Season 1 = 13 (Serialized) Episodes

Well, I don't remember the exact wording from the interview, but “returning cast members” could also mean actors from the previous shows playing new characters. Like René Auberjonois in the Enterprise episode “Oasis”, or Ethan Phillips in “Acquisition”.

I'm also not clear about why people seem so sure this won't be a new iteration of the Trek universe, parallel to the TNG era. This is still a possibiliy, right?

Of course it is, since we still haven't yet been given a definite answer as to what universe/time period the show will be set in, other than speculation, rumors, and downright lies.

THe only other place is between ENT and TOS but that would be a real step backward - he clearly wants to move forward. Also he taked about returning cast members so I presume he mean TNG era people?

He talked about returning characters not cast members eventually. That could mean anything. Dax could be around in any time period. Before ENT you can have Soval and Chocrane, between ENT and TOS T'Pol and the ENT crew. Between TOS and TNG TOS crew, ENT-B/C crew, and Tuvok. Post VOY, any TNG era crew for a while and The Doctor for even longer. And you could have those same crew members in any universe. So to think the comment limits anything is just a lack of imagination.

Anythign could happen - the universe isn't even 100% confirmed even though we assume Prime!
 
Returning characters - eventually - could mean anything. Could mean there's a plan to have someone cameo, could mean simply 'maybe, if there's a chance'. As long as it doesn't mean the last episode will be Riker in the holodeck, it'll all be fine.
 
Even if it is set in the "Prime" universe it can still be a new iteration of Star Trek. Just look at TNG. I don't really see the big need to reboot/remake. Just set it after what we've seen already and maybe put 100-200 years in between.
 
I just don't feel like I could connect as well, but it's all in the characters. TNG is hit and miss for me, so the idea of a TNG "generation jump" from TNG (The New NEW Generation?) is one that I am skeptical of. Is it possible? Sure and I would like to see the tech evolve again. But, do I think it will work better than a reboot? I struggle with that.

Very true, this is another possibilty. Reboot the premise, look and fell of the franchise but stay in the same fictional universe. I suspect (and somewhat hope) this is what we'll be getting. I don't really care about another time jump pre or post Nemesis. I just want a fresh, unique and daring take on the Star Trek formula. And after all I've heard I'm pretty confident Bryan Fuller is just the right guy to deliver that.

Best to avoid any threads where Star Trek characters and stories are discussed. Even in a complete reboot with a fresh universe, eventually there's going to be discussions about things in earlier episodes. It's inevitable in any series.

My preference would be to ditch a lot of the past continuity, or at least don't make a big deal of it. When Doctor Who came back in 2005 it was still the same show but it didn't really rely on what came before so much. A kind of soft reboot. This obsession that people have with 'gap filling' is problematic to me. You end up being constrained by what's been done after the period you're setting your show in. Much better to maintain the feel and spirit of a show and make a clean break in this instance. Set it hundreds of years in the future.

True, but I suspect that Myko was talking about the sometimes seemingly endless nitpicking over obscure points of continuity, which can get kinda old after awhile. I mean, of course, we're going to compare any new STAR TREK series or episodes to what came before, but that doesn't mean that there aren't more interesting discussions to be had than obsessing over whether such-and-such episode "violated canon" or not, as though that's the main thing that a new STAR TREK series should be graded on.
 
Star Trek takes place "only" a couple hundred years in the future. One possibility is that it will take place roughly at the same time as the current movie series, or 5-20 years in that future. Another possibility could be a TNG-era reboot. I just can't see them doing something post-voyager at this point in time.

But you know that's kind of part and parcel of Trek fandom, if not geek culture in general. There's always going to be aspects or discussions that one may not like. My point was just to ignore those whenever they pop up because they're definitely not going away, regardless of the direction of the new show.

They need to do something post Voyager so we don't become bored with the sameness. If it's not a hundred or so years after the last TNG movie, with new tech and a new look, I'll be less interested.

If it's got good stories and acting, I'm interested. I don't want a TNG or DS9 reboot. I'd love to see some of the better elements of all the shows incorporated into nuTrek17 in one form or another, but I think the safest bet is to simply create a new future based (loosely) on the movie series.
