New Frontier

PKS8304

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I recently got a copy of Blind Man's Bluff, its next in my pile to read.
I was wondering if anyone knew if Peter David planned to write anymore New Frontier novels beyond it or does this one wrap up the series?

He'd like to, but when the book was published he wasn't under contract for more and future books would depend on BMB's sales.

or does this one wrap up the series?
Not especially, no. It ends on something of a cliffhanger.

I think more are up in the air, depending on sales of the last one. But I do know that Blind Mans Bluff doesnt wrap the series up. David should just write one more of them, and make it an epic finale that leaves everyone wanting more. Leave it at that.

I hope he does! Ive been a fan of the series since its inception in the late 90s. I have the comic tie ins as well. Now I just need to get my hands on one of those Calhoun action figures lol

Although I think Peter David actually managed to have a cliffhanger while having a rather good ending at the same time (in case it was the swansong). YMMV

I agree. I feel like interest has been petering off (no pun intended). I really want this to be a series that gets a solid conclusion.

I really, really hope we get at least one more. I know a lot of people don't like New Frontier anymore, but I'm still loving it. The quality did dip awhile ago, but I have to argue the last few books have been great.

While I don't love the series as much as I used too, I still think it deserves a proper finale, if anything just as a way of recognizing how important it's been to Treklit. If NF hadn't come out, and been popular, I doubt very much that we would have Titan, the DS9R, Vanguard, ect.

I don't mean to derail the thread, but I figured it'd make more sense to ask this question here than to start up a new thread for a simple question.

How intertwined is New Frontier with the rest of the current novel continuity? Is it integral to the greater continuity, or has it mostly done its own thing? I only ask because I'm planning on catching up on my Trek reading, and I'm not sure if I ought to include New Frontier now or go back and read it later once I'm caught up on the main continuity.

^From what I understand (I'm way behind on my NF reading!), NF is almost completely detached from the rest of the novel continuity. Characters from the series pop up in some other books, but you don't need to read NF to understand anything else that's going on.

It's really a trick subject. Other novels have mentioned the exsistance of the New Frontier crew; however, a novel such as Blind Man's Bluff kind of contridcts certain things established in other novel (trying not to give too much away).

i have one! got it from eBay 3 years ago for my birthday.

NF is kinda off in a 'remote section of space' and doesn't interact much with the rest of Trek. It gets featured in crossovers like Destiny and such, but the NF books don't always reflect that.

I actually woulda liked to see a New Frontier book tie into Typhon Pact, if only to see Mac cope with diplomacy. *lol*

The only time I felt a bit lost was when the NF crew dropped in on The Next Generation in "Before Dishonor". My reaction at the time was "WhoTF are these people?". Other than that, there's virtuaully no crossover, besides a few namedrops.

I love New Frontier and think Peter David is an amazing author. I definitely hope he writes more New Frontier books. I just started Missing in Action, so I've got a few more to go, but I've loved the series so far.

I loved New Frontier when it first came out, but after the entire Beings plot (probably a bit before that) I felt things going down hill. Characters felt more like comicbook heroes, dialogue was filled with one-liners, plots were very action-based. And that's oke once in a while, but book after book... It wasn't my thing anymore, and the last NF I read was Stone And Anvil.

That being said, for Peter David and for the fans I hope there will be a decent ending to the series, a true finale. I do feel the series (any series really) deserves that, for the fans and for the creators.

^I thought "The Beings" was the best plot line in the series. I loved how he took one of the most far out TOS episodes and managed to make it work in the 24th century with a modern audience. I especially loved how the saucer and drive sections of the Excalibur worked together in a coordinated defence. That battle is still one of my favorites.

What I love about Peter David is he probably captures the wonder and wimsy of TOS better than any of the other writers. Sure his stories can be a little comicbooky but that is what makes them great. I wouldn't want all authors and books that way but having PD once in a while livens things up by getting trek to stop taking itself so seriously.

I hope we have not seen the last of NF, but if we do I think it ended on an interesting note. When I talked to PD after he had written Blind Man's Bluff but before its publication, it was clear he still has affection for these books and characters. But I also got the impression that he wouldn't want to write a book because he is asked to (though it is money) but he would want to because he thought up a story which he would like to tell; New Frontier on his terms.

If PD did decide to stop writing NF, it would be nice if he allowed other writers to step into the breach. Rise Like Lions as well as the NF anthology showed me David Mack would do a fine job. I also get the impression that Peter David trusts him with his characters as they coordinated about Calhoun and Soleta.

If the publishers decide they are done with NF, I would hope they allow PD one last chance to either write a dynamite book to gain readers back or end it in a blaze of glory.

I've thought for a while that, if PAD were to stop writing NF, that KRAD would be great at stepping in with these characters and giving it a fresh direction while retaining the core essence of the series.
