So you can have guest appearances, a shared depth of worldbuilding, name recognition and a nostalgic selling point with a built in demographic ?
I don't k ow why people are still shocked. Mining IP has been going on forever

As well as unreasonable expectations, inflexible audience members and desiring the same old thing 20 years later. So you can have guest appearances, a shared depth of worldbuilding, name recognition and a nostalgic selling point with a built in demographic ?
I never got into Firefly, possibly because I was rooting for the Alliance the whole time. I suspect that was not what the viewer was supposed to do.
You're such a rebel!![]()
I'd watch it just to see the Starship Troopers armor againHey, there's an idea for a FF reboot: Make it an Alliance show! Hell, I'd watch it.
The Expanse is basically a by-product of a time where everyone in sci-fi was trying to do their own take on Firefly, and is certainly the most successful of these, given nowadays everyone is trying to be like The Expanse. Although I will say The Expanse toned down the similarities with Firefly in the show, the books really aren't subtle about it. Martian warships are actually described as "flying office buildings" in The Expanse books. The Expanse took Firefly's place in a lot of ways.
What I remember from the DVD interviews and commentaries, they wanted all the rich people on the show to have Chinese or Chinese influenced names as a reflection of the fact the Chinese are supposed to be major players in this world. And so, Simon and River's last name was Tam to accommodate that desire.Looking back it is surprising that River and Simon weren't Chinese, that seems like it would've been a natural fit. Tam being a Chinese surname was this the original intent? It's been too long for me to remember what the details were in the show regarding them.
The Alliance is a government which conducts experiments on children and eradicates entire planetary civilizations for scientific gain. They allow their military and intelligence services carte blanche to needlessly slaughter innocent civilians. Not to mention there's the Operatives who are basically Section 31 aside from the fact they actually are officially sanctioned by the Alliance's government. If that's not evil, what is?seriously though, that's one of the problems I had with FF: Unless the government being rebelled against clearly deserves it (and the Alliance did not - even Joss Whedon admitted that the Alliance is not an evil empire, simply a vast government), I don't get into rebels much.
In SW, for example, the rebels were clearly in the right. They're obviously the good guys, so it's easy to sympathize with them. In FF, not so much.
As a Marvel fan, I had to read this about 3 or 4 times before I realized FF was Firefly, and not Fantastic Four.Hey, there's an idea for a FF reboot: Make it an Alliance show! Hell, I'd watch it.

To be fair, much of that was shown in the film, not in the series itself. The Alliance is a government which conducts experiments on children and eradicates entire planetary civilizations for scientific gain. Well, the movie was basically a condensed version of the next two seasons worth of storyline for the show, so that stuff probably would have showed up eventually had the show continued. To be fair, much of that was shown in the film, not in the series itself.
Not quite as explicitly, since we don't know the depths of influence that the Blue Hands had within the Alliance government. I see what you're saying but I hesitate to say all the Alliance is OK with this. The film definitely cements it, but I think if we had gone to Season 2 it would have looked a lot different.Well, the movie was basically a condensed version of the next two seasons worth of storyline for the show, so that stuff probably would have showed up eventually had the show continued.
But if we focus just the series itself as was aired, we know the Blue Hands were behind the experiments on River, and that they had to have some sort of official standing in the Alliance given when her, Simon and Jayne were arrested at the hospital, the police reported the matter to the Blue Hands. The Blue Hands then showed up and murdered all the police at the station to keep the secret. So the series itself still shows the Alliance is okay with experiments on children and officially sanctioned murder of civilians.
Yep. I've been digging for the past 15 minutes, and every site I checked out all source from the same rumor back in 2020 by GFR. There hasn't been a peep out of Disney from what I can tell. Yeah, Disney owns the property, and they may take advantage of it, but the notion that it will be family friendly? It's all conjecture based on an anonymous source. Here's the quote that stood out most:
There is zero information to based this off of. So, unless new news has been posted I would not be looking at a Firefly reboot any time soon.
To be fair, much of that was shown in the film, not in the series itself.
And, FWIW, I've never seen the movie. So if the Alliance is made more explicitly evil in it (which, as I said, Joss Whedon apparently never intended the Alliance to be), I'm not aware of it.![]()
Far, far, more evil. So, yes, additional information points. And, FWIW, I've never seen the movie. So if the Alliance is made more explicitly evil in it (which, as I said, Joss Whedon apparently never intended the Alliance to be), I'm not aware of it.![]()
