Spoilers New DSC Novel revealed at Shore Leave - Dead Endless

If it involves the spore drive, I would think it’s got to be set during season one, as in after Michael joins Discovery, since the drive wasn’t fully functional until they found the tardigrade and hooked Stamets into it in its place.

Though if it’s set in that time between the Battle of the Binary Stars and Michael joining, that’d be a nice gap filler, considering I’ve wanted to see some exploration of the Discovery crew in that six month gap.

It worked, they just could't do very accurate jumps before getting the Tardigrade.

They were only jumping a few kilometers at a time, IIRC, from “Context is for Kings”. Plus, why would they be stranded when they have a regular warp drive?

Definitely curious about this one, it's about a character I like, by an author whose work I've enjoyed in the past.

I'm inclined to believe "pre-season 1" actually refers to the period between Binary Stars and Contest is for Kings. The serialized nature of the season makes it difficult to sandwich an adventure between episodes, and this time period gives us the entire season 1 cast besides Michael anyway.

There is an indeterminate amount of time both before and especially after Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad where a quick adventure could take place.

I’m more interested in seeing pre-Burnham Discovery though. But the idea of this taking place then doesn’t make as much sense.

And since writing my post I've realized there was a month between Butcher's Blade and Choose Your Pain that I guess could easily have an adventure slotted into. Especially since that's when they really started seriously using the Spore Drive, that could easily lead to a miscalculation stranding them some place too distant to warp back from.

I wouldn't mind if they did find a way to slot this in one of those gaps. As interesting as it can be to get prequel novels, it would be nice to get at least one novel set during the series.

That's what STO has been doing, their missions have been set in the show's time gaps.

That's what Star Trek Online has been doing as well, their missions have been set in the show's time gaps.
A couple between Binary Stars and Episode 3 which I forgot the name of, and one during the time gap when Discovery is in the MU.

I just remembered, there was also the Captain Saru comic, which I believe took place between scenes in the Season 1 finale.

Hm....Although novels like this are very nice for character studies and closer looks at these people we've come to love, the stories themselves don't always interest me. "Discovery is stranded. Will they get back home?" Well duh.... The suspense is often gone for me.

A logical deduction given December 17 is the release for Dead Endless.

Unfortunately, that means I likely won't get to read it until sometime in January, given Star Wars is out a few days later and the next week is Christmas.

Will this be consistent with the IDW 2018 Discovery Annual? That thing spans quite a few decades, and deals with Stamets' road to joining the crew of the starship, plus how he first got involved in the transdimensional-fungi investigation to begin with.

Still, another Galanter Trek-novel is always something to celebrate.

Possibly. Disco novels and comics have been remarkably consistent with each other so far.

Whose in the captain’s chair will probably dictate whether I’m interested in this one or not.
