I'm thinking right around the time they begin pre-production sounds like a good time to begin giving it much of a worry. Between now and then will be a lot like the last time around, when a lot of things were theoretically up in the air, and Abrams was making noises about maybe not having time to direct. (Come to think of it, didn't he dither for a bit on the first film, too, before finally announcing that he'd direct it himself?)I fear we'll hear 50 more candidate names until they decide what to do.
I won't start worrying about it yet.

The interview doesn't indicate that Orci has any intention of stepping away from Trek, of course. Most likely the script will have been largely developed by the time Bad Robot and Paramount agree on a director for ST 3 - probably by Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof.
Spielberg?
Please, god, no!

I don't know, Trek could really benefit from a cloyingly saccharine view of growing up in America in the mid 20th century, an annoying blonde kid with a pudding bowl haircut and some cute aliens...
