New Classic Who Blu-Ray Sets (2021 edition)

Happy days! A brilliant season. The middle two stories in particular could really benefit from some more attention from the Restoration Team.

It's still got six brand new features, plus Behind the Sofa. But this season was heavily covered in the DVDs, and Spearhead from Space already had a Blu-ray release with two excellent documentaries covering Pertwee and Caroline John, so there's not really much else they could have added given that almost everyone involved with the making of this season is no longer with us.

I'm also guessing that more of the budget was needed than usual for restoration, especially improving the colour on Silurians and Ambassadors of Death. So new FX would probably have been pushing it. Omnibus versions of Silurians and Inferno seem like good ways of adding value. I like them as an option.

Officially announced now.

Seems a little light on extras and no new optional effects. I know they're just a gimmick but I do like watching stories with them turned on once.

A great season for sure.

When done right, the new effects can be pretty great. Most of season 25, Kinda, et al, really do the stories justice, which is impressive considering the originals did hold their own in context. More often than not, I enable them straightaway as they're so well done and really add to the story without trying to replace the story.

But what could really be done with these four stories, what's really needed beyond improved restoration? Visible laser beams? They're not needed for Autons, none needed in two stories, and Silurians now emitting Dalek-type beams would be silly when it's just a heat ray - if a microwave doesn't emit laserbeams when cooking the food or marshmallow peeps as seen through the glass viewfinder there, they're not needed for Sammy the Silurian either. Allocating more funds for improved main visuals should be the main priority.

I'm hoping for a much better Invasion of the Dinosaurs. My wish list is a better colorized version of episode one and alternative dino effects.
That's what I'm hoping. But if any get updated effects it'll probably be one of the others.

I don't think new dinosaurs are realistic. If there's any budget for new FX on S11, I think cleaning up Planet of the Spiders, replacing some of the flat chromakey backgrounds on Metabelis III and improving the Whomobile in flight scenes would be great.

I'm not a huge fan of Planet of the Spiders. But I'd argue that Pertwee's episodes in particular could gain a lot in general, so I always look forward to his releases.

Season 11 is probably on hold until they can get a better restoration of Invasion 1.

My guess for the next three are 16, 21 and 6. In no particular order.

Picked up Colin's 1st season this past week for $20. For some reason, these seasons always end up below $30.
