New Christmas Special thread

This is the first time that I'm actually caught up with series in order to see the Christmas special during the Christmas season, assuming BBC America plays it around the same time as the regular BBC. When does it usually air? Before Christmas? On Christmas day?

It's always shown on Christmas Day in the UK. Up until last year it was shown some time later in the US, but I believe that BBC America transmitted it on Christmas Day last year so you can probably expect it to transmit on the same day this year.

that's a bit weird, it says 'actress Claire Skinner', but the photos themselves say Maxine Peake, who it actually is...

According to a very reliable poster on Gallifrey Base, the big guest star for this year's Christmas special will be familiar to people who watch the comedy quiz show QI. That would suggest either Stephen Fry or Alan Davies, who appear on every episode of that show. Neither of them have been spotted yet by the fans in Cardiff who keep an eye on all the filming, but production has only just begun this week.

Very excited about Maxine Peake. Can't get excited about Davies or even worse Fry possibly being in it.

It certainly isn't Maxine Peake. The official Doctor Who Twitter feed put out a message saying she wasn't in the Christmas special, seemingly because of that Wales Online page with the photos misidentifying who the actress was. It looks like it probably is Claire Skinner, but its not certain as no information about the Christmas special has been released by the BBC.

Here's hoping it's Stephen Fry! And while he's there, hopefully Moffat can coax him into writing another script for the show.

Stephen Fry? I can't find the words to describe how much I detest him, much more the idea of him appearing in DW.

To be honest, I think this Christmas special thing has run its course. Have an episode at Christmas by all means, but lose the Christmas from it.

well, i'll admit, i wasn't 100% convinced it was Maxine, but i was going off the fact it said it was her in the Mirror yesterday as well...

Stephen Fry's name is mud in Doctor Who fandom since be bad-mouthed the show a year or so ago, so I really doubt it'll be him. He rather forfeited his right to try another script too. I'd rather see Graham Norton or someone like that (Norton's name was muddied a bit because of Animated Trailgate last season, but he made up for it by doing a great Dalek gag on his show the next week).

Ah come on, that wasn't Norton's fault at all. That was down completely to someone in the bit of the BBC that deals with marketing and promotion who for some reason didn't realise that the on-screen next graphic they had come up with would ruin the end of the episode.

Fry didn't bad-mouth the show. It helps if you read what he actually said:
The only drama the BBC will boast about are Merlin and Doctor Who, which are fine, but they're children's programmes. They're not for adults.

"And they're very good children's programmes, don't get me wrong, they're wonderfully written … but they are not for adults.
All he was saying was that the BBC needs to put more emphasis behind drama for adults. It's not the BBC that has the best-reviewed television series of all time. All he was saying was that the BBC needed to aim higher than they do. Only within the myopia of Doctor Who fandom can Fry's praise of the series for being what it is and what it was designed to be be taken as an attack on the program; even Moffat brushed off Fry's supposed "bad-mouthing."

If Moffat could get Fry, either in front of or behind the camera, there's not a doubt in my mind that he would, no matter what fandom thinks Fry said about Who at the BAFTA ceremony.

It would help, though, if the 'Christmas' element of it all actually involved Christmas. As opposed to just some sort of monster/robot based on something Christmassy. Or a book about Christmas.

Whatever. Claire Skinner's in it, I'm sold. If Alan Davies is in it as well, all the better.

Never heard anything bout that - I don't like him much outside of Blackadder, but he still seems popular.

so I really doubt it'll be him. He rather forfeited his right to try another script too. I'd rather see Graham Norton
Jesus fuck, no, not that prancing talentless cunt!

He was even rubbish in Father Ted. The guy's a chat show host, not an actor

Some news from the shooting of the Christmas special.

Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill shot a scene of the Doctor arriving, with snow, outside the house which was used as Amy and Rory's new house in The God Complex. So Amy and Rory do appear in at least a small part of the Christmas special, although it may just be a little cameo. But there have been reports that Karen Gillan was on another location shoot, so she may have more than a cameo role.

I've got zero problem with Fry being in an episode. But I agree with you... the actual Christmas theme in the Christmas episode is very tiresome. No mention at all of Christmas would be great.

The BBC will be releasing information about the guest stars and the story of the Christmas special at 8am tomorrow UK time.
