My new Tholian Webspinner based on photo references.

One of my favorite things about this particular ship is the way the lighting of the original model gave it an almost crystalline appearance. I tried to do something similar here.

Finally, here is a familiar scene using the new Webspinners with my TOS-E model.

How did you do the energy grid?

The energy grid is a cube, stood on one point. Onto this I projected each face as a glowing gold texture masked by a stencil map. This makes the whole structure invisible, except for the areas the stencils allow to show. Each stencil is different with the web only as complete as the position of the webspinner on that face. The stencils were also given the irregular energy pulse look.

The shot was rendered twice. Once with all elements present, once with no star background and the Enterprise and the webspinners in non-reflective black. This second render was brought into Photoshop as a separate layer and blurred to give an additional glow effect.
