New 40th anniversary edition of ST:TMP novelisation?

Between the TMP novelization and some of the background material for NextGen (like the description of Dr. Crusher and his thoughts on the Ferengi), I get the impression that Roddenberry would have happily made Star Trek porn if given the opportunity.

What’s the description of Dr. Crusher and the Ferengi? This is really interesting.

I don’t think of Gene as the saint one might imagine “The Great Bird of the Galaxy” to be (L. Ron Hubbard, is that you?), but there’s often too much cluck-clucking when it comes his libido. Let’s be honest, Trek is for the most part sexually prepubescent to pubescent at best. There could be a lot more sex, mature sex, in Trek, and it would only approach normal.

Although certainly his portrayal of Deltans as a people whose advanced sexuality could addict and mentally damage humans was another iteration of the same "female sexuality is a dangerous lure" trope that he'd previously employed with Orion women and Nona in "A Private Little War" (and in the very sexist opening narration to that TV-lawyer pilot he did with DeForest Kelley in the early '60s).

Except I don't think there's anything to indicate that male Deltans wouldn't pose the same dangers (though, of course, your point still stands for purposes of this particular story, since it was a female Deltan we were dealing with).

This is fine actually. Klingons eat the hearts of their enemies. So what if Ferengi are/were hornballs? Also, Klingons have maybe two penises and Centauri have eight long prehensile tentacle ones. I’d like to see more diversity of physiology and biology in Trek, and sex should probably be part of that.

This is a nice surprise. I hadn't thought it would be popular enough to garner a 40th Anniversary edition.

ST:TMP was actually kept in print by Pocket Books for many years - and probably holds some kind of record for the longevity of a novelization.

I was just looking around on the S&S site and I somehow managed to miss this.
I have to admit, I've never read this one, and I have kind of mixed about whether I want to or not. I am curious to try out the one Trek novel written by Gene Roddenberry himself, but from what people have said on here, it sounds like he put some very strange ideas into it.

Those ideas aren't very far-fetched at all compared to a good deal of literary science fiction out there.

The 1933 novelization of KING KONG by Edgar Wallace has had a pretty long run, although it has drifted in and out print over the years. It tends to get reissued every other decade or so, often whenever there's a new KONG movie in the theaters.

Not by the standards of '70s science fiction. Again, this was in the wake of the Sexual Revolution, which many authors assumed would continue still further instead of having a backlash toward renewed cultural conservatism. So lots of '70s fiction portrayed futures that were more sexually open and unrepressed.

That can be attributed to pretty much the entire novelization.

That said, the term 'love instructor' could mean something as innocuous as a dating coach, or more involved, like a sex therapist. The term is obviously weird, but the actual concept may not be.

As for Deltans: I usually cringe when 'advanced' alien cultures look down on humanity and act all arrogant about how primitive we are, but at least Ilia didn't sound that condescending when she described us as a "sexually immature species". She was just pointing out a fact, she wasn't smug or anything like that. And she did sign an oath of celibacy...

I remember it also being reissued in the 70s to cash in on the 1975 remake, complete with a new cover painting by Frank Frazetta. That was the edition I read as a teen.

I assume somebody put it out to cash in on the Peter Jackson remake, too. Got to be one of the most durable movie novelizations out there.

How I hope they could get Shatner to read this part.

To think: this book was in my school library when I was in seventh grade. Obviously whoever was in charge of these decisions never bothered to read it.
