Never seen TOS scenes...round 3

Warped9, we may disagree on some things, but there can be no doubt that you have done a great job with these manips. Kudos to you!

One tiny tiny nit: Wasn't it established that Sarek and Spock hadn't seen each other for like, 15,20 years when Sarek finally did show up in "Journey To Babel" ?

^^ The actual line spoken by Amanda in "Journey To Babel" is that Sarek and Spock haven't spoken as father and son for eighteen years. That's why I lucked out finding and image of Sarek with an expression of exasperation. I wanted to put accross the idea that Sarek barely tolerated interacting with Spock as a Starfleet officer yet steadfastly refused to interact with him on any level as his son. Hell, Sarek even has his back turned to him.

If I were writing this story--and I am considering taking a crack at it--then I'd consider keeping the fact that Sarek is Spock's father a secret from the rest of the crew. I might at the end of the tale reveal the knowledge to Pike who would then gain some new insight into his young Science Officer after seeing him treated so brusquely by the renowned Ambassador Sarek. This could tie-in later to Pike becoming somewhat of a mentor to the young Spock and explain Spock's intense loyalty to Pike as well as truly rationalize Spock's actions thirteen years later in "The Mengerie." Pike respects ability and quality of character and his acceptance of Spock on his own merit wins the young Vulcan's fierce loyalty. This would be a rather different relationship than the one shared between Spock and Kirk which is based more upon mutual respect, admiration and eventually close friendship.

Just my take on it.

W9, I enjoy the backstory and the pics of that last meeting. Very accurate and informative!

005, by your avatar...can I assume that you prefer The Dukes of Hazard: The Original Series? :guffaw:

there is a line in babel were we find out that several years ago spock had seen his parents.

yeah the important part is they havent spoken as father and son in 18 years.

^^ Yep. Amanda chides Spock for not visiting home in 4 years.

Warped 9, I also rather like your Spock/Sarek/Pike theory. It doesn't heavily contradict anyone's backstory & enhances our perception of the characters. Sounds like a cool piece of fan fiction to me. :)

Be kind.

Here's a botched first attempt at a live-action version of TAS' Lt. M'ress.

Ya know, the real flaw with this is that the body is all wrong...for a felinoid anyways.

Yeah, also I think that when you get right down to it a humanoid like cat would likely have a face structured somewhat differently than an Earth feline, or in this case a bobcat.

I can't help but look at this and think :wtf:

Hey, oh...OH...what a body on that Caitian...oh...wow...

Talk about making cat-calls..."Here kitty-kitty-kitty!!!"

Hell, I can't even look at this thing now. It's disturbing somehow. I must have succumbed to the heat--it's warped my judgement. Uh, no pun untended.

Rationalizing aliens from creatures like birds and cats and reptiles for example can be tough. You can't really just add an animals head to a humanoid body. You have to make some effort to conceptualize how uch a being could evolve and what its evenyual form might take. Something like Arex is somewhat easier because he doesn't look like anything with which we're familiar. Years ago I saw a picture of a being based on the idea of the dinosaurs not dying out and otherwise evolved into a bipedal intelligent being. It was startlingly believeable looking yet it didn't look like a human with a reptile's head nor did it really look like an upright walking T-rex. It was its own thing and yet one could clearly discern the evolutionary aspects of it. Very cool. And so if I was hellbent on depicting a catlike being like a Caitan or even a Kzinti then it would take a lot of thought. It should also be noted that beings like that would likely need something like a universal translator to communicate since the structure of their mouths and vocal area likely wouldn't allow for human like speech. Of course, I could be wholly wrong about this but I don't see how it would work.

In the magazine ST: Communicator, there was a stylized picture of a Kzinti that's much closer to a naturally evolved version than what TAS gave us (I wouldn't know about Niven's take on them, though it's gotta be very similar seeing that it's the source material)

I think I have a scan on hand...

The article from which it came:

EDIT: I knew I scanned it, I just had to look through my own Memory Alpha of ST related files.

Kzinti have been depicted numerous times on the covers of the Man-Kzin Wars books, and they look rather different than the ones seen in TAS.

I'd like to see that scan if you have it.

^^ I had just been using a google search to look for Kzinti images and I'd come accross that pic just moments ago.

Interesting--the Kzin have been depicted numerous ways from almost bear like in TAS to tiger like to sabercat like. I'd never really appreciated how they'd been depicted in TAS until I'd seen the diversity of depictions since. The Kzin in TAS actually aren't a bad extrapolation. And I wonder how much input (if any) Larry Niven had in their appearance on the show.

If you just type Kzinti and search for images, there's a pencil sketch of that same pic, and it shows the eyes much closer to the nose, which is a nice change.

I'm still working on the M'Ress thing, but in the interim here are a few things I'd forgotten about.
