Never seen TOS scenes...round 3

Posted by Warped9:
Here's a look at a TOS era impulse "exhaust" setup. The image of the ship is a cgi render by Charles Casimiro. I tweaked the image some and superimopsed it into a planetary orbit scene. I then cut the impulse exhausts from a shot of the TMP refit as seen from aft and moving away. I toned down the colour a bit to a more yellowish hue and added a bit of glow, but if you look close you can still see the neat grate effect in the exhaust ports.

Damn! Now that's something I'd like to see on TOS...

Now if we had a nice looking FJ-spacedock mesh with a good interior-mapped sphere...instead of that spotlight shit that makes no sense, unless the impulse engines create smog in confined spaces...

;)

Warped9, I'll have to say that the TWOK uniforms look better with the different color schemes than what they went with. Keep up the great work!

Truth is I ran into a bit of a creative wall for awhile there. It isn't that I didn't want to do any more scenes but that I was running a bit dry of ideas. I'm also somewhat picky and unless I feel I can pull something off to my satisfaction then I may let it be.

My original intent had simply been to "fill in the blanks" so to speak by doing stuff that would have been nice to see in the actual TOS episodes. Then I started imagining things that could have happened off-scrrenn as well as before, between and after the aired events.

This little hobby is really a small way of satisfying my Trek interest in face of the lack of the kind of storytelling I prefer.

In some ways one could also label me a hypocrite. I've participated in numerous discussions regarding the idea of enhancing TOS' f/x and overall appearance. I admit to being somewhat intrigued with the idea of what could be done, but then I'm also horrified at the prospect of what might be done.

There are some who advocate a wholesale update of TOS' f/x, effectively to make it more consistent with the overall look of contemporary Trek. And along or not far behind this line of thought is the idea of adding visual references that would retcon TOS to make it more consistent with later series and films. And yet this is exactly the sort of thing I'd expect from Berman and most any other like minded dolt from Paramount if they ever elected to augment TOS' f/x. And so whenever the subject of actually considering whether TOS' f/x should be updated I'm compelled to argue that they should be left alone (albeit cleaned up) rather than risk violation of the original producers' artistic integrity.

I abhor the aforementioned viewpoint. Beyond the odd indulgence in humour or just plain fun the approach I'm guided by in my manipulations is to retain an authentic looking TOS visual style or aesthetic. And I refuse to add retconning references. I'm guided in my "speculations" solely by what can be deduced directly from TOS' own references and to some extent the materiel in TAS and TMP. I'm not wholly unaware of subject matter from the later films and series, but I would consider incorporating such into a TOS scene only if what was not contradicted in matter and/or spirit by the materiel within TOS. Essentially I work from the premise that the later series and films haven't happened yet and it once again 1964-69 or 1973-74 or 1979. :)

I'm also guided by the example of the TMP DE. With rare exception most of what I try to envision just may have been within reach of the TOS producers if they'd had a little more time, money and resource (which likely never could have happened under '60s tv production conditions).

Chris Pike seems wary prior to the ceremony of his promotion to Fleet Captain...

Perhaps he's thinking, "I used to rail against 'the Man' higher up. Hell, now I'm going to be "the Man.' Crap, I really don't want anything to do with this shitty job. "

As I've told you before W9, I really enjoy your Pike pics. This one is awesome. Keep up the great work!

^^ I have fun doing them. The Pike era is something I'm really intrigued with. We'll likely never get to see it, but I like to think a well made Pike era series or film, be it live-action or animated, would rock and perhaps revive some of that ol' time TOS feeling and spirit. There's about ten years worth of stories there begging to be told.

OTH perhaps it's best. If done by Paramount today with the current mindset in place the project would likely be a hack job replete with soulless music, banal writing, meaningless phaser fights every ten minutes and continuity references out the ass. The kind of Star Trek I'd like to see, even in part, seems unlikely to ever happen again, at least not as long as it's actually a Trek project. But perhaps someone someday will come along with something non-Trek that still plays with similar ideas and just happens to rock us the way TOS did...and still does really.

Warped9, just wanted to say.....YOU'RE MY HERO! ;)
I just love what you're doing here! I can't wait to see some more!

Sometime before Vger Admiral Kirk was so damned bored with desk duty that he indulged in buying a car. Here he is authorizing purchase...

:D

^^ No, actually it's the 1961 Ford Gyron concept car.

This is the Jupitor 8 otherwise known as the Reactor 2 here on Earth.

My mistake. I was confused. I know Kirk was also looking at General Motors Firebird turbine show/test car before he chose the one he bought.

:D

I just assumed that Kirk only collected firearms, now you guys have produced three sportscars. WOW!

Great work!

^ He collects antique firearms and antique sports cars! (The three pictured are all wheeled surface-contact vehicles - with what appears to be genuine rubber tires!) :D

I like the Gyron because it looks so The Jetsons like. Yeah, it's got wheels, but it also looks like it's about to lift off with antigrav and fly. :D

Thanks for the compliment, but undeserved on my part. Check the post times. Mine was a 30 minute rush job, meant as a joke, and would be more appropriate for Fark than in comparison with Warped9's work. I stand humbly well behind the master. :)
