Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

OK, those last few character shots are just too damn cool!

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

I have to confess to a touch of (extra) revisionism here, in particular when it comes to colours. I tend to tweak the shades of the uniforms to get what I feel is a truer representation of what I feel the colours should be. I try to go a little softer and more pure and sometimes a little deeper. Often the colours on tv looked a bit off, possibly due to some of the coloured lights that were used as well as the film stock and of course whatever the original colours actually were. We know that at least in the first two seasons the command colour was actually green even though it usually and weirdly came out more gold. As such I try for a softer and more gold colour as opposed to burnt orange which I think looks awful. Also the rather salmon coloured tunics in "The Cage" and WNMHGB looks plain ridiculous to my eyes. The red support tunics often looked a shade or two too bright for my liking and the blue sciences often didn't look, well, blue enough.

In regards to the Enterprise I lean towards a more amber yellow glow to the nacelle power sinks as opposed to red which in my view is too much like contemporary Trek and I prefer to get away from that.

I think the main problem is that you're making the picture of the Enterprise too damn big.

Make it about half the size it is now, and I think you'll have a more believeable background piece.
Im working on it, Capt, im working on it. :D

Now I have minimal skillz in the whole photoart department (so don't attack this too much) and I didn't want to spend a huge amount of time on this. That being said, as a kid, my favorite episode was Arena but I always thought it'd be cool if the Gorn could open his mouth.

Ok, as we never got a shot of San Francisco, Earth in TOS, i figured id do one. ;)

Now, this is a lift from 'WNMHGB' but i have made a back story for this image;

ggbridge.jpg

This scene would take place as either as a flash back or a scene very early on in TOS. Its a scene i envisioned taking place at Kirks apartment in San Francisco, which is what i have turned the briefing room into. Now, this is a different apartment from the one seen in ST:II and III. This is his lounge area which over looks San Francisco.

Now, this is just after Kirk has put on the Enterprise uniform in his apartment, just after being convinced that taking command of the Enterprise is the right move by the Enterprise's senior officer, Cmndr Spock.

Spock visits the then Commander Kirk to convince him to accept promotion to Captain, after long persuation by Spock, Kirk puts on the uniform and proceeds to a meeting to be offically named commander of the ship and be promoted to the rank of Captain.

-The Image-
Now, its taken ages to get different focus intesities on Spock and the backgorund and the Golden Gate Bridge.

The red support beam behind Kirks head is the boundary for the background, now as Kirk and that beam are the only parts that are in focus. Spock was also in full focus in this shot, so i blurred him a little so he is out of focus. The shot of the bridge and the bay area is blurred 5% more than Spock, and the wall behind Spock is blurred 3% more than the Bay and bridge.

And i tried to get rid of the alert light above Spocks head, but it didnt work.

I have also darkened the image as Roddenberry had this nifty little idea of an automatic environment simulator thingie majig, in that a ship or buildings lights will dim at night and lighten up at day, so as this shot is at night, i darkened the image by 45%.

The window i made from scratch, and i got rid of a chair that was next to spock and widened the image more to the right.

^^ Yep. I like it.

On note of the Gorn aside from this cool pic. For a long time I've wondered if maybe it really could have been done differently and what you could conceiveably do with cgi today. Firtsly I applaud the designer for giving the Gorn eyes that are rather more insect like than reptiliaan--it's a small and easy thing, but it's an effort to make the gorn less familiar looking. Aside from the lack of believeable looking skin and clothing, cumbersome movements and that it looks too dinosaur like overall is that the legs are all wrong--they should actually be with recurved knees more like a velociraptor, reverse from a human's. I know this would have been impossible back when TOS was made, but it would like wild if done right today.

I do have a quibble about your backstory, ClassicFan. I don't think anyone would have to had convince Kirk to accept command of the Enterprise--it's something he's been training his entire career for. And I could actually see Spock being wary of Kirk upon first meeting particularly in light of his deep loyalty to Captain Pike.

Ahhh crap, i forgot one little tid-bit.

Kirk, in my backstory, was first offered command of the USS Potemkin, a sister ship to the Enterprise, but kirk was persuaded to take the Enterprise as its mission statement was basically risk and explorer type mission, the Potemkins was primarily a science research vessel, Spock, after viewing kirks profile, came to the conclusion that a science vessel wasnt the place for kirk and that an exploritory vessel was the place for Kirk.

Hey CF can I "borrow" your image? I think I could get rid of the red alert light over Spock and use some photoshop filters to make it in "flashback mode"

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

Okay, I had to redo and tweak this shot because having the image of the Enterprise on the wall just looked way too fannish. This version speaks more of Kirk's sense of interest in exploring exotic worlds as well as his romantic sense of adventure...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

that is much better than the previous entries... the picture on the wall was simply too large...

good thing with the Gorn too!

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

Oooh, nice image change. ;)

Although, you could Rigel 7 as a homage to the incedents that happend under the previous captain, complete with dedication plaque. :D

Ok, its a case of the blues for kirk...

a_case_of_the_blues.jpg

All i have done is take the red out of the room and replaced it with a more home like colour, as i see red as an onboard ship/starbase colour. It also makes it seem a different room, and it doesnt look like part of the Enterprise anymore. And the red around the window is simply light reflecting off the bridge and onto a white frame giving the illusion of a red window frame. ;)

Also, the alert light has been changed as it is for mood lighting, like i said about the auto environment stuff, it changes all day/ night round, and, as this is late at night, its a midnight blue, and if it were, say, noon, it would be a white-ish light.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

^^ You know what you've done here--changing the colour of the support beams--has reminded me of something else it would have been nice to see on TOS, and it would also work equally well in the future of any other hsip based series. The use of colour to denote what deck you're on or at least what area of the ship you're in. Not only would it make sense as far as the crew is concerned (as well as relieving monotony) but it would also strengthen the idea that viewers are seeing different parts of a very large vessel. Changing colour today should be relatively easy with cgi.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

Oooh, nifty idea.

Although, that would be such a small change that it would probably go un-noticed. All i did was select the area and change the colour, that simple yet it has such a profound effect in the long run. If this were to be done in the actual episode this pic is lifted from, i doubt it will be noticed that much.

I put blue there, and instantly, its not a ship, its technically a new set, with the addition of a window, a backdrop and new colours.

Were redressing sets with style here, Warped.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

At some point I want to get set up for capturing my own dvd stills. I have ideas for shots that I unfortunately cannot do simply because I don't have the images I need.

I'd like to get hold of a shot of Scotty's quarters from "By Any Other Name" or "The Tholian Web." I have plenty of shots of the Enterprise, but there are still a couple of beauty shots from particular angles that I don't have and would love to because they were rarely seen. I've some ideas for Engineering if I had the right stills. Ditto with Sickbay.

*Sigh* Oh well, I'll just have to wait...eventually.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

^^ Yes, I've gotten quite a few of my vidcaps from there as well as trek5.com. Occasionally I'm also able to scan in a still from a book, magazine or calendar that serves as well.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

Ok, thats a luxury i dont have.

I have loads of TOS books and pics, but my scanner is dead, so i cant scan from them. Im relying on good old internet.

Although, when i get R2 dvds, theres gonna be some serious capping. :D

well, if you ask me McCoy was aboard, but he was not Chief Surgeon by that time  great work again!

In WNMHGB, during the chess game, Kirk gets a call from the bridge and in the background, behind Kirk, is a guy out of focus in a blue shirt. The shape of his head with hair is very similar to McCoy's. I've always figured we can assume it is McCoy if we want.

That's a good point. IIRC, ST:TMP did that practically on-set, by changing wall panels in the corridors to suggest different decks (i.e., some corridors had red panels, some had silver, etc.).

Best,
Alex
