Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice...

I love this shot, but I personally think the shuttles and Scotty are too big. Just based on what the interior of the refit looked like in TMP, and based on the size of the windows in this shot. Still, great idea though :)

I've been following the projects of Phil Broad and FourMadMen who are both trying to reconcile the interior and exterior mock-ups of the shuttlecraft we saw onscreen. The general consensus is that the exterior mock-up was actually too small and that the interior mock-up was more believeable as a "real" vehicle designed to operate independently from the mothership for extended periods. In that light the "real" shuttlecraft would be in the area of about 30-33ft. in length. Also, in extent the size of the Enterprise herself is also being called into question based upon a more likely scale for the original 11ft. filming miniature. The more likely size would be nearer 1080ft. as opposed to the long held 947ft.

These issues have been and are still being discussed at length on the Polar Lights' Modeling Boards. Also I took into account the apparent size of the observation deck seen on each side of the hangar and how that reflected on how tall an average person would look like on flight deck. And so I stubburnly ( :)) stick to my reasoning here in regards to the shuttlecraft. Scotty's height may be just a shade to tall, but then again it wouldn't be by much at all. It gets really tough to estimate some of these things.

The Enterprise at high altitude pulls away from Captain Christopher's Air Force Starfighter interceptor in "Tomorrow Is Yesterday."

I went through the list of episodes, both live-action and animated and came up with about three dozen possible ideas for imagined scenes that more-or-less fit into the established events seen onscreen. The TAS ones are particularly fun to imagine because I do it from the standpoint of what if it had been as a live-action episode done while TOS was still in production. That's why I ignore the animated style shuttles in place of the more plausible Class F shuttles.

I also must confess to a small ulterior motive. There is ever recurring discussion of updating TOS' F/X which I find a terrifying thought because I have no trust whatsoever in what TPTB would do to it. Here, I simply wanted to try my hand at showing how it theoretically could be done while still retaining the original distinct TOS look and blend seamlessly with the remaining original footage. Obviously the animated scenes are never going to be done live-action--those are pure fun on my part and my own personal way of validating TAS as legitimate. But most of the live-action shots are genuine attempts to imagine what could be done.

Note that I have no interest in retconning--that is to say shoehorning elements of contemporary Trek, particularly ENT, into a show where none of that could have possibly been even a remote consideration. The idea is that it's still 1965-69 (and none of that other silliness has happened yet) and the original producers have magically been able to have access to resources they didn't have then. :)

Other things I'm envisioning? Showing that the Enterprise can indeed fire its phasers from other parts of the ship, a couple of shots from "The Doomsday Machine" and "The Ultimate Computer," a few more TAS shots and more. I don't want to be too specific because I haven't worked everything out yet and I don't want to spoil the fun.

:)

A couple of more shots from "Tomorrow Is Yesterday." The Enterprise makes its high warp slingshot run around the Sun...

Some mighn't like the high blur, but it is an experiment in suggesting higher than usual passes.

The Galileo hurtles in for a crash landing in "The Galileo Seven."

Dear God! These are so incredible......I'd love to see Paramount revamp the special effects like these!

IF this were ever done, I'd be very nervous over what TPTB would do to it and what they might shoehorn in. Having said that I wouldn't mind heading the group entrusted with doing it. :D Then I could kick anyone's butt who suggested anything like trying to make the show look like today's Trek or adding inappropriate references to contemporary drek.

I think Scotty is fine. I agree that the shuttles are a little large, maybe fo the perspective. I do like the guy in the overlook, shame they didn't do that back then.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

A little off the wall here. I came accross this pic of the TOS shuttlecraft miniature as it was supposedly used in TNG. When I saw the blacked out fore section it got me thinking.

What if Star Trek had been really forward thinking in its day, by that I mean really forward thinking in terms of things we take for granted today as concepts. What if the forward hull of the TOS shuttlecraft had actually supposed to be a sturdy polarized material that could be made to go transparent in whole or in part and it could even be used as a viewscreen to magnify distant objects?

Well then it might have looked something like this...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

Yes, I really like this idea of a polarized front screen.

It would have been very cool in TOS to have seen something like that.

Very nice job. :)

When did we see a TOS shuttle on TNG? (or are we talking about someone's desk model and I'm about to feel real silly?)

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

^^ No need to feel silly. I believe it was in 1st season TNG that we saw a TOS shuttlecraft miniature in a conference lounge or something.

It was in "Justice" in an observation lounge, lower in the ship (not the one behind the bridge)

Re: Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice.

A slight correction--I've looked over my notes again and I was able to find about six dozen potential shots in both TOS and TAS. I'm also toying with the idea of envisioning some post TMP scenes which could comprise about another half dozen or so shots.

This thread could be ongoing for quite awhile yet...

:D

that would be no bad news :D

about the enlarged window in the shuttle, somehow I don't think it is such a good visual, there should at least be a small frame around the window... that would make it more plausible, because the transparent TECH would need something to be attached to...

Please don't confuse my sloppy work with the validity of the concept. Phil Broad over in the Polar Lights modeling boards, (Phil runs the cloudster website) really likes the idea.

Actually one of the things I love about TOS is how well it lends itself to updated ideas to rationalize its technology. This is in no small part due to TOS generally avoiding getting bogged down in trying to explain everything in detail and usually sticking to plausible theory as opposed to technobabble.

Good! This thread rocks! Fantastic work so far.
This thread is one of the first I check every morning -- good to hear there is much more to come :)
