Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

I think we'll have to wait on the next Phase II episode until W9 returns from vacation. Unless there is a guest director out there somewhere?

(I knew I´ve seen this asteroid before!)

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

This isn't "New Era" but something I just cooked up in Photoshop...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Hey

Where'd that shuttlebay come from? If it's actually from the original series... STV did not a bad job of creating a version of the shuttlebay true to the original.

Pretty self exclamatory here. I wonder if the first season of this new show will be any good.

Yes, from the series. I removed the original shuttlecraft and inserted mine (after the addition of some noise and blur and a couple rounds of darkening).

^^ Can you show me a drawing or something?

I did my homework and here you go W9 ;)

Was this supposed to be in Star Trek I?
This might be where the idea for Ten Forward was derived.

Yep, but unfortunately the production didn't have the time to build a full-size set for the sequence, so they reused pieces of the rec-room to create a quick 'n' dirty officer's lounge. However, Doug Trumbull's VFX team fabricated a miniature set in accordance with Probert's designs which can be glimpsed during the docking of the shuttle Surak.

This might be where the idea for Ten Forward was derived.

Probert was one of the primary designers for TNG, but I have no idea if he was responsible for the Ten Forward concept since it was built after his departure from Paramount.

Herman Zimmerman said in several interviews that he was very careful to design the shuttlebay set in ST5 in accordance with what the fans had seen before "in all the manuals". It's not all that consistent with TMP's version, but it does resemble the TOS version a lot.

Best,
Alex

It's "Two Aft" :D
(or is it deck three, split-level?)

Very nice.

I is back now, but it'll take me a couple of days to get back up to speed.

I imagine that, given the budget problems of TFF/ST5, the TMP design would have been cost-prohibitive. However, imagine how much more impressive and dramatic the crashing shuttle scene would have been with almost the full length of the engineering hull!

Life wasn't the same without you. You left and my writing inspiration went on vacation too. Hope you thought of some inspirational pics to post!

Welcome home....Trek BBS that is. :D :D :D

Thanks. took me about ten minutes (including cutting).

Can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

Would have been easy enough to have closed the dividing panels between the hangar bay and the cargo area. Actually, the big "garage doors" at the forward end of the bay, as presented, probably led to shuttle lifts much like the ones in TMP.

I don't think budget was as much of an issue as Zimmerman working from the sources he thought were the critical ones at the time, and possibly forgetting that the bay's interior had been redesigned a bit for TMP.

Best,
Alex

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

The shuttlecraft is by FourMadMen and the picture composition is by me. I've realigned the name on the starboard side as well as polarized the forward viewports and retracted the landing pads for flight mode.

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Hey, look good Warped9. Glad to have you back.

I knew that starboard name was bugging you (I'll probably change it back myself). I've since added viewport "glass" but am still tweaking the IOR on it (too high right now). In any event I think you've left the door open!

Would the TMP design be relevant since in V it was the Ent A, rather than the refit? Or is it established that the deck layouts didn't change between the refit and the A?

Actually, there's no structural reason why the bay design in STV couldn't be viable, especially if we posit TMP-style elevators right behind the "garage doors".

It just always struck me as amusing that Zimmerman used the TOS bay design as his model, rather than the TMP bay design, considering that the E-A is, after all, structurally very similar to the E-refit.

Ironically, though, the set in STV gives a better visual sense of the proper scale of the bay. In TMP, it looks vast, but that's pretty much an illusion (the bay's big, but not that big ;) ), given the actual dimensions of the ship.

Best,
Alex
