Never seen TOS scenes, but would've been nice...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Then there was the time they popped open the grate under the bridge communication console and there was a cast iron wheel in there!!

That wheel was the base of an Atlas microphone stand. So it did tie in with "communications" somehow. <g>

You folks are absolutely amazing in this thread. I am in awe of your computerized prestidigitation. thanks for sharing these imaginative pictures.

Here's another from the dusty file cabinet. An early take on a scout class taking FJ's basic concept and reworking it I'm not that keen on it anymore although there are aspects I like such as the hangar deck atop the saucer. But this was years before I saw Masao's Predator-class which I rather like better.

Am I the only one who has never liked the one nacelle vessel?

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ Well then you'll likely not like this either. I've posted it before but here it is coloured. It's shown here with the original art that inspired the concept. I call it my 22nd century Hercules-class star clipper, pride and unsung workhorse of the United Space Service which in my universe is an offshoot of UESPA and predecessor to the UFP's Starfleet. The Hercules-class was a versatile spaceframe that had a configuration that designers found very amenable to warpflight. The ship was constructed and fitted in varying configurations to accomodate diverse mission profiles from transport to medical support to deepspace survey to sentry patrol and frontline combat unit. It saw extensive action during the Earth/Romulan conflict and advanced variants were incorporated into the Star Fleet as late as the early 23rd century. The design was so successful that decendants of the concept are still in Starfleet use. Older variants that were not mothballed or scrapped can still be found in use throughout the Federation member worlds (just my little private backstory). Transport variants allowed for cargo containers to be strapped atop the ship's back. The variant below is the deepspace survey/sentry patrol model. The warp field stabilzer booms are on each side of the warp nacelle. Above those are the missile launchers on port and starboard. The auxiliary craft hangar is seen from above and towards the aft end. The little copper coloured dishes are part of the planetary sensor arrays while the white/grey dome atop the saucer houses the main space sensor array. The navigational deflector is actually housed in the dome at the front of the warp nacelle. The window port seen forward and just below the dome is the "flying bridge," essentially a command observation deck that looks directly into space while the main bridge is situated behind it. A main observation lounge is situated at the ship's bow. The earliest versions had a top speed of about Warp 2.5, but by the end of the century they were exceeding Warp 3.

Besides the Vulcans and perhaps the Andorians as well these were the ships that began encountering the first alien races that would eventually form the UFP. They defended spacelanes and trade routes from audacious Orion pirates. They also "found" many lost colonization efforts of which some would later join the UFP. And, yes, I know all this flies in the face of what is being depicted on ENT, but considering my posted opinions no one should really be surprised.

Now here's an image I did about 5 years ago when I got my first digital camera (sub 1 megapixel -- primative!!!). And I'll be severely disappointed if no-one recognizes it. Beyond the obvious of course.
4MM, I know that you consider this merged pic as "primitive", but it took me a couple of minutes to realize it. But then again, I have no artistic talent...just artistic appreciation. ;)

Does this posting mean that you will be modeling the second most famous starship class in the history of TOS? :D
Well when I used the work primitive I was actually only talking about the sub megapixel digital camera. Although the skills I show in photomanipulation are indeed primitive by the standards shown right here in this thread.

As much as I like the D7 it's probably way down on my list of things to do. Step one is to finish the shuttle and then I'll be free to devote more time to the others. Aprart from having several ships I'd like to do I would like to pick on and do it with full interiors. Or at least full enough to where you can "walk the hallways". Although I don't think I so ambitious as to try it on something the size of Enterprise.

And as I'm sure several here have noticed, the Klingon vessel in my picture is an old miniature made by Game Science (way back in 1976). I used it playing SFB (that's Star Fleet Battles for you yound whipper-snappers).

The more I think about this the more I like it. I'm going to do some tinkering to see what she would look like without the missile launchers and three cargo containers strapped to her in place. Something like this might have been nice to see as the "old" freighter S.S. Woden in "The Ultimate Computer."

:)

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Boy, I really do like those designs! Far better than ST:ENT's conflicting designs, and it DOES look more advanced than anything we can build today - hence, futuristic, without conflicting with the original series...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

The star clipper's four basic configurations: deeprange survey/sentry, fast transport, heavy transport, mobile medical support...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ I envision that during the 22nd century there could have been two or three competing warp stardrive configurations in concurrent development: the familiar twin nacelle arrangement, a single nacelle alternative/variant and the ring ship design. Evidently by the mid 23rd century the twin nacelle design won out or at least became more prominent based upon what we saw onscreen, but in the 22nd century we could have seen some real diversity in ship design.

The star clipper is meant to be about twice the size of the Botany Bay sleeper ship. The nacelle arrangement allowed for ease of propulsion unit swap-out replacement when/if required for maintenaince or upgrade. The deeprange survey and sentry variants wee then fitted with missile launchers and perhaps early laser emitters. They could also have a "collar" affixed to the ship's back to allow for rapid transport of emergency bulk cargo beyond the ship's standard internal capacity--a valuable service for far-flung outposts, mining operations and remote colonies. The heavy transport variant sacrificed it's main defensive armament for freight capacity and ease of cargo container exchange as well as reducing speed and maneuverability due to the increased mass. The MMS or "Miss" units were the equivalent of fully equipped flying hospitals that were able to service remote outosts and fledgling colonies. These also saw particular heavy action during the Earth/Romulan conflict.

(Kinda fun thinking this stuff up when I designed this ship several years ago. Also the more I look at this design the more I think it screams for a scratchbuild. In the least it would be rather cool o collaborate with someone willing to build it up as a 3D cgi model.) :D

Although quick and crude it would have been nice to have seen something like this as the S.S. Woden in "The Ultimate Computer" instead of just a reuse of the Botany Bay...

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Hey everyone,

I've been lurking the boards for a couple of months now, especially this thread. Having finally decided to become a member, I wanted to use my first post to praise and thank everyone here for the excellent quality of their contributions. A fantastic concept! Keep up the great work!!

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^^ Agreed. I don't know why I didn't think of using my own design when I rendered the original pic using the TAS freighter. The problem with using TAS images in live-action shots is that they are so obviously 2D images without any real visul depth. Here's a case of instead of reusing an inappropriate model they could have used a nicely rendered matte painting cutout that was only going to be glimpsed for a few seconds. I understand time and money constraints were involved yet how were they able to come up with a neat and distinctive alien ship design in "Spock's Brain" of all episodes and yet not come up with something novel in a much more worthy episode like "The Ultimate Computer"?

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

^ From that angle it looks like the 1701-D...With luggage :D

I think it's the way the light curves the saucer

Re: Never seen TOS scenes...

Although not strictly TOS if there was ever to be another Star Trek series in the genuine spirit of the original series than I'd love to see something like this...without any damned suffix. This is my U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-71001...

That's a very good point. Something I've wondered myself. As far as I can remember We only see that ship at the one angle and it didn't seem that dimensional as it was.
