Never Ending Story

I had never seen this movie before, until this past weekend when I streamed it on my TV via XBOX/NETFLIX. Yeah, I know, how could someone of my age (50+) not see this movie? Who knows..

But I did. I made some speggetti around 9Am (yep..a dad making breakfast can lead to that) and we watched THE NEVER ENDING STORY and were all entertained. The FX are a bit dated, I guess, but the whole quest really seemed to be a template for movies to come (POTTER and LOTR or Princes Bride).

Noah Hathaway, Boxie from oldBSG, actually did a pretty good job, as did the kid in the 'real world'. My 12 year old daughter now has a crush on Hathaway. Kind of hard to explain to her that he has to be in his 40s by now. She doesn't believe me. (Whatever happned to him anyway?)

I read that they are making a modern version of this movie. I hope they try to retain some of the innocence of the original. But something tells me they will try to modernize the story with formulatic changes like "lets make the real boy an abused child" or "lets make the warrior in the story gay" or "lets make it an anti-Bush era story" or "lets get MCG to direct because..." well, no possible reason for that..but you never know.

Anyway..great movie. I hear that the second is pretty lame, but we dont care. I ordered it on NETFLIX (not able to stream it).

What are you memories/thoughts of this movie? And I have to admit..that damn song is stuck in my head!!!

The Never Ending Storyyyyyyy....yyyyyy..yyy...yyyy...the never ending STORY....yyy...yy.....yyyyyyy

The movie is decent, but not very good if you compare it to the book. Michael Ende's novel is phantastic, the original movie doesn's do it justice, that's why I can't wait for the new movie.

Well..we liked it and thats all that matters. Sure, it isnt great...but who cares? It entertained us..

You do know LOTR and Princess Bride are based on books that came long before Never Ending Story was ever made? So I don't think NES was a template for them, but the other way around maybe.

Yes I do know this...in fact LOTR is mentioned in the movie...but both movies you speak of came after THE NEVER ENDING STORY (though perhaps the LOTR cartoon proceeds it..not sure)...

The movie is good..thats all I am saying.

Limahl FTW. :bolian: Definitely the best 80s fantasy kids movie tie-in song ever. :D

I liked the film version too: very imaginative. I will admit I have never read Ende's book, though. I think the book might be at my parents' house.

The book is worth reading, as the first movie is really only one half of the story. The sequels don't count. :p :D I personally would like to see a modern version that is more closely based on the book, the way Peter Jackson was able to adapt the bulk of the LOTR books into film.

The Neverending Story was one of like 2 movies the catholic school I went to as a kid must have owned because that's all we ever saw lol. I'm sure the teachers must have wanted to shoot themselves in the head hearing 30-40 kids singing the theme song so often.

One of my all-time favorite fantasy/sci-fi movies. Part of the Flight of the Navigator-Last Starfighter-Neverending Story triumverate. :techman:

The book is decent. I like where the first movie ended and the changes it made. The sequel was horrible. I was never brave enough to watch the third one.

the first movie was actualy a pretty good film representation of the first half of the book, the second movie just took some of the concepts(Xayede, the silver city, and Bastian's memory loss) of the second half and made up thier own story

Right on the money. :D

I'm reading the book now. I have the movie and love the movie to pieces (also a big fan of FoTN & LSF), and also like where the movie ended. The visuals are terrific, and I love all the characters. I had a crush on Tami Stronach the first time I saw the movie (I was 8).

Daughter and I love the film.

Have never read the book...time for a trip to Half-Priced Books...

I liked the 2nd one as well, not as much, but thought it was good.

Never saw the rest...are there 3 or 4 total?

**********
Robert, If you guys haven't seen "Land Before Time" add that to the list...but there are wwaaaayyyy too many squeals of that one.

I was disappointed with The Neverending Story due to its false advertising. It's an hour and forty-two minutes long. That's not even close to neverending.

And having been disappointed when I was young enough to take the title literally, I've just never been able to get into it.

Do not watch the third one. For the love of God, little babies and those marshmellows in the Lucky Charms cereal, do not watch the third one. It is appalling. It really has no redeeming features.

I love the NeverEnding Story!

I think my favourite fact about it is that the kid who played Bastian never appeared in anything else (as far as I know) and is now an expert on 19th century photography. That makes me love him a little bit because that's my "specialist subject" too! :luvlove:
