Netflix's Lost in Space Season 3

And of course, the whole idea of magnetic boots is utter nonsense, making as much sense as trying to swim by strapping weights to your feet and walking on the bottom of the pool. It has no advantages over just floating and pulling yourself along by handholds. It wouldn't work anyway, since spaceships are made mostly of lightweight, non-magnetic materials, and the magnetic fields would screw up shipboard electronics. It's just an incredibly terrible idea all around.
In an interior environment, that totally makes sense. Do you think the same applies to exterior environments too (e.g. the spacewalk in First Contact)?

That's what tethers and thruster packs are for. The spacewalk in FC was ridiculous because they had neither of those. How would you rather climb the side of a skyscraper -- by using a rope, or by walking up it with suction cups attached to your feet? It's a stupid way to try to stay attached to the ship, because if you lose both connection points even for a moment, you're lost. Plus, as I said, real spaceships are made of light, non-magnetic metals anyway.

And an MMU would be even better. They had thruster suits back in TMP, so why don't they have them a century later in FC? With thruster suits, they could've gotten to the deflector dish a hell of a lot faster and been able to stop the Borg sooner.

Incidentally, this is something that bugged me in LiS too. They did far too much climbing around outside the Jupiter 2 without tethers, not just in space, but when sailing across the ocean at the start of season 2. Untethered spacewalks are a contrived, artificial way to build unnecessary suspense, like starship seats not having seatbelts.

The thing about "most" is that it isn't "all." There has always been an audience that does care about such things, and there is an entire thriving genre of hard science fiction that is tailored to that audience. It's as valid as any other genre and has thrived in prose for generations. It's just rarely been featured in film and television.

That's because an audience big enough to allow hard sf to "thrive" in print is rarely sufficient to keep a TV series on the air for more than a few weeks.

Which is why there have never been any hugely successful hard sf TV series.

On to Lost In Space, which is definitely not hard sf, although their frequent - and frequently wrongheaded - attempts to incorporate a little schoolboy science into the plots are appreciated:

The finale was disappointingly frenetic, featuring more rabbits being pulled from hats than open mike night at a magicians' club. But the way the various characters wound up was pretty satisfying.

It's also nice that all, or most, of the arbitrary and apparently coincidental comings and goings over the last three years tied into each other at the end. Kelly's space mission and the robots and the Christmas star and what happened to the robot makers and all of that were one narrative after all.

Finally got to see the last season. Sad it’s not continuing. I remember thinking, back when the show premiered, how much the actor playing Will reminded me of my son (they are about the same age and, at the time, looked somewhat similar—akin to how cousins can look somewhat alike). Given the delay in getting the third season, I wondered if the series would have to cope with a significant growth spurt as well—and right on cue…

As for the season itself, I quite enjoyed it. And any show that has an adolescent boy racing around with Rush blaring on the sound system (as I may have done once or twice  and my son would probably do given the chance—which I don’t) earns a 10 out of 5 star rating.

Yeah, overall I'm very glad they've made it. It was a great revival. I can only hope they'll maybe bring the cast back in the form of a movie or two.
