Netflix has announced that it will be adapting The Chronicles of Narnia into a TV series and films!

“It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world,” said Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis, in a statement released by Netflix. “Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”

I'm loving the long overdue trend of adapting richly complex book series into shows, even if they had turns as films with varying success. Narnia is quickly following the footsteps of His Dark Materials and Lord of the Rings (although the latter is different in nature) and I sure hope all three adaptations are wildly successful, creatively and financially.

I can only hope that Earthsea will also get the same treatment because the Sci-Fi Channel mini-series was an abomination that even Ursula K. Le Guin publicly denounced.

Sweet! I loved the Narnia books as a kid. Can't wait to see what they come up with.

I have minor reservations after Prince Caspian but I'm glad they are giving it another go. Still waiting for a good "A Horse and his Boy" adaptation.

I could see this working out pretty well as a TV series. The books were good, and the latest movies were pretty good as well. I'd love to see all books adapted. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

I haven't read the books, but I did enjoy the first two movies. Netflix hasn't disappointed me yet, so I'm optimistic they can pull this off.

I remember enjoying the BBC adaptation way back, I found the films rather uninspiring.

So, should Father Christmas appear in a new adaptation of Wardrobe? I can see a reason for imaginary creatures populating Narnia like it's some kind of bizarre Platonic realm but Santa is real, isn't he? :shifty:

Too early?

Good news BTW.

Should they take the easy way and yet again adapt TLWW or should they do something different and first adapt The Magician's Nephew? It is after all the first one in the chronological order.

The three BBC series from 1988-90 skipped straight to TLTWATW, combined PC and TVOTDT (skipping THAHB) and finished off with TSC. If Netflix do all the books, I hope someone works the appropriate classical planetary motif (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) into the title sequence as C S Lewis supposedly had one of these in mind for each book, according to the book Planet Narnia. However, I don't recall which celestial body is associated with which book -- I think TLTWATW is Jupiter because of the presence of Aslan. Not at all crucial though it would be a nice nod to old CSL, even if it's only a theory that's never been confirmed.

Found the supposed association list online:
Venus: The Magician's Nephew
Jupiter: Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Mercury: The Horse and his Boy
Mars: Prince Caspian
Sol: The Voyage of the "Dawn Treader"
Luna: The Silver Chair
Saturn: The Last Battle

This is merely one proposed reading order based on chronology. Many literary critics argue that the books should instead be read in publication order to preserve Lewis' development of Christian themes over the series of novels, so perhaps the Netflix series should follow suit.

I think it would be very strange if they didn't start with LW&W. Aside from being the first published, it's by a fairly wide margin the most well known and regarded of the Narnia books.

^ We've already seen TLTW&TW adapted several times, though, so I think it's time to go "chronological" and start with The Magician's Nephew, as it's a better "entry point" for "casuals" who don't know or care about the books or the adaptations that have been done in the past.

two years now and hardly a word about it. I have been looking around for any info but the only thing of note was from June, when Matthew Aldritch was selected to the the creative architect for the series.

Yeah, I'm surprised we haven't heard anything. Hell, we've heard more about the Middle-Earth series Amazon is developing and we still know what that show's focus will be or even it's name.

It took them two years just to find someone to helm the thing? Well if that doesn't spell "Development Hell" I don't know what does. Indeed I suspect if nothing happens soon the rights are liable to revert.

I wonder what the hang-up is? I mean it's a well known book with two on-screen adaptations to refer to if they're feeling lazy about structure and Netflix certainly hasn't been shy about throwing money around.

It's not casting the kids because they wouldn't even start that until they're less than a year from shooting, for obvious reasons.

Maybe they're finally wising up and realizing that "a bunch of random-ass white British children who land in a diverse world full of adults and are immediately crowned rightful monarchs" isn't really a great look anymore? :p

Never read any of the books but loved all 3 of the movies, especially the first and 3rd. Totally ready for this.

Likely Covid is to blame. All productions have had to stop or slow down, so it wouldn't surprise me if they've had to shelve it for the time being.
