Netflix’s Lost in Space Season 2

Just watched the sixth episode.

Spoiler:

I ask people who are more scientifically competent than me: I know they did it for dramatic reasons, but didn't they lose heat too quickly while they were in the box? I mean, they were 4 people stuck to each other, I suppose the case was fairly isolated and around them only the void, and therefore they could lose heat only by radiation, but it almost seemed that they had thrown them into nitrogen liquid!

Yeah, that made me wince. There's a pervasive myth that you freeze instantly in space, forgetting that vacuum is an insulator and astronauts/spaceships are at more risk of overheating. This show's science is generally pretty good compared to most SFTV, but they dropped the ball here.

Also, the Resolute's gravity is an issue. How does it work? I mean, presumably the alien engine created it, as the other one did aboard the J2 at the end of season 1, but the show seemed inconsistent about which way was down. In the ring sections, down is toward the aft (which makes sense, since it means that the vector wouldn't change when the engines were firing), but there was one shot late in the season that seemed to indicate that the "down" direction in the central shaft was perpendicular to the axis.

Also,
when they put the ship into a spin, it had no effect on the onboard gravity vector.

Correct, Space is a Horrible Conductor since theres.. nothing in it! It is technically very cold outside, but it takes some time to get to there..
I mean, you can submerse someone into freezing water, and they'd survive for minutes..
So you have a cramped space filled with 4 people who Are Heating the air in there by themselves.. you'd be more worried about running out of air in 5 minutes.. :)

Exactly, The lack of oxygen should have been a worse problem. And, considering that they were directly illuminated by the sun, they should have warmed up, not lose heat!

I hereby put in my response for the IDGASATS Committee.

The acronym means "I don't give a shit about the science." The series is about "Danger, Will Robinson," not science class.

The main-robot put a blanket around the other robot..... so it must be very very extra cold also inside the Resolute

Just finished Episode 10 yesterday. I haven't posted in this thread much if at all, so what are the rules with spoilers? I don't want to mess anyone up. I'll keep the spoilers to basic concepts of the show, and here's the warning.

It really is a shame that this show will likely take another year before we get more episodes. I felt this season was better than the first.

I never watched Lost In Space --the original. I did see the movie, but like most, I didn't like it.

It seems like this Netflix show doesn't follow the premise though. We are two seasons into it, and they aren't really lost in space. The Robinsons are with other humans. So the show is no longer about a single family lost in space, but just a group of humans, over 500 of them, struggling to get from point A to point B.

I thought after the first season, the premise would have matched the original show, but they seemed to go in a different direction.

For what it's worth, I like what they are doing on Netflix better. The concept of one ship lost has been done many times. I feel this is a bit more original and more interesting to me.

I'm not a big fan of Will and the robot-- or at least less so in the second season. I think the robot needs to learn English, but I do like most of the other characters on the show, and I loved the cliffhanger at the end of episode 10. I won't say what happened yet.

The box was insulated inside. I think that was mentioned on the show. All they did was take out the heating unit to get more room.

Something fun I found

Speaking of plot holes, where was the Dianoga?

I was just thinking in the old show, the robot mostly needed speech for Dr. Smith, either to trade barbs or to warn Will about him. He probably could get by with "Affirmative" and "Negative" (and, well, "Danger") otherwise. :)

Cute video. Mina seems younger here than on the show for some reason, can really see it here. Did Max have a growth spurt, I don't remember him being the same height on the show though that may be due to different filming setup.

really? i thought she looked really really old in that food-clip, like she's in the 30's.....

What a marvelous show! Loved the second season possibly more than the first. The characters are top-notch. The survival type stories are exhausting, but I mean that in a good way. They have me on edge. And, visually, the show is gorgeous--both the SFx and the ship designs. The Saturn ships in particular feel well thought out and "realistic."

I do like Dr. Smith as she is. A fascinating character and one that is fairly unique as a characters far as I know. She has a consistent set of traits, strengths, and weaknesses. Like her or not, she feels like a real but flawed person. A person like that would drive you batty! Last season, I argued that the Robinsons should use her to accomplish things that they normally wouldn't be able to do themselves--at least sparingly. Use her deviousness and manipulation skill for good ends. This season they've started doing that to an extent. The Robinsons being forced to work with her made some good drama.

My one wish going forward is that the Robot will learn English soon, or at least allow him some more complex form of communication. Him being a mostly blank cypher is getting old. I can see why they held him back for most of the season.

The overuse of lens flares drove me up the wall. I kept watching thinking they were being observed by some invisible entity. Seriously, there were scenes with no light sources near the characters and still they had flares between them and the camera/our screens.
Couldn't the powers that be see how distracting all that was?

Hm. I didn't notice any.
They were less like flares and more like ghosts, and didn't look deliberate, as if the camera shooting the scene was out of focus. We're talking more a glitch than the way JJ Abrams pleasures himself to how much glare he can obscure a scene with.

LIS can only be criticized for dodgy science because the writers research and actively try to base a lot of plot points on some aspect of technology or scientific theory - and then they trim for dramatic purposes.

A show like Star Trek, OTOH, makes virtually no use of real science at all any more.* So they're safe.

*No, name-checking a biologist who likes to do hallucinogens and then hypothesize about his drug trips is not basing something on scientific theory.

Lens flares was my knee jerk designation for what I kept seeing. A better description would be like looking through Ironman's HUD. Starting in episode 2, in scenes where characters were talking to each while indoors, I kept seeing very odd and distracting lighting reflections onscreen. I started to feel as if I was observing conversations through a 3rd party.
It was so weird to me. Now I'm nervous that many people didn't notice anything. Maybe I'm losing my grip on reality. Anybody know the name of a decent therapist? ;)
