His scars all around the back of his head are quite horrifying, as well as his chewed ear. As he did not have this damage when we first see him I assume he got it in Rura Penthe. Makes me really want to see the Rura Penthe scenes.. I think you could do a whole episode or movie about the Narada crew's years on Rura Penthe and their escape.

Somewhere I saw an interview with Abrams where he said they didn't film it but the ear & scars ~were~ from the Klingon prison.
