Kirk was a Cadet still (maybe he did have a officer rank already but I doubt it since he didn't even graduate) when he burst on to the bridge

Kirk Prime was a lieutenant while still studying at the Academy. Saavik Prime was a lieutenant while studying at the Academy. Nog also had a rank above mere "Cadet".

IIRC, onscreen computer data on JJ's Kirk showed him as holding the rank of lieutenant while still at the Academy.

^Cadet Uhura also held the rank of lieutenant in STXI. Spock says she's a lieutenant when they're arguing over her assignment to the Farragut.

How anyone's supposed to know her rank without sleeves is beyond me .
