Nemesis - Extended Ending

So most of us know that originally Nemesis was a lot longer than what we got in the final cut, particularly the ending, and that most of what's missing is on the SE DVD. Lots of people have been crying out for an extended cut that puts everything back in, somehow assuming that it will make the movie better.

As an experiment I decided to try this with the ending of the film, by re-editing it to make it resemble more the earlier drafts of the script. You can see my efforts here. Main changes are:

- 'Worf and Geordi clear out Data's Quarters' has been inserted between the wake and the Enterprise in drydock. Music from the B-4 deactivation scene has been added.
- 'Picard talks to B-4' now occurs directly after the Enterprise drydock shot. In the early script draft available on the net this conversation actually happens which the Enterprise is still in the rift, but this isn't possible here due to the dock being visible outside the window. Worf's dialogue has been removed. Music from Data's wake is inserted over the end to cover up the original 'Blue Skies' cue.
- 'Picard talks to Beverly' has been inserted next, which leads into the Picard/Riker goodbye.
- And finally, the infamous bridge scene comes last. Music from TFF is used here to give a bit of atmosphere, though I don't think for a second that the seatbelt gag deserves the TMP/TNG fanfare, but here it is anyway! The slower version of the 'Blue Skies' cue from the expanded score is used here to wrap things up.
- Various door sounds and general ship rumblings have been added throughout.

Comments? My opinion is that the whole thing is too damn long and slow and needed to be chopped down, though perhaps not to the extent that it was.

StewMc - great job there! (once again). Really great job work.

Dammit, they should have left in the data's quarter stuff and Bev at Starfleet stuff. God damn you Baird!

That said it does feel a little long, i'll agree. I wonder if you could cut out the seatbelt gag altogher - I looked at the shots and I'm sure with your editing skills you could lift it out.

BTW - did you add door swoosh sound fx on the bridge shots?

Nice job.

I wish the blue skies excerpt from the end credits was still over the B-4/Picard scene, though. And yeah, the seat belt gag doesn't really work.

I have to be honest and say the editor did a GOOD job in trimming all that out. The point was to try to make this a more accessible film - and the MAJORITY of that stuff was rather boring fanwank of no interest to anyone except a truely hard core TNG fan. Had all that stayed in, I, as a general Star Trek fan, and not a real hardcore TNG fan would still be going - WTF is this?

If the majority of what was cut was along similar lines, the editor did a damn good ob in selecting what was needed to make it a more watchable film using what he had to work with (which imo, wasn't musch at all).

yeah if this ending was used along with the Extended Wedding, Data/Picard Chantu scene, the He's Not you bev/picard scene, and the mess hall scene it'd have made the movie a lot better.

Heh you're too kind. Was thinking about that though, might investigate in the morning.

Nope the bridge scene actually seems to be virtually finished effects wise: door noises, engine hum, and even the viewscreen has a view of the drydock. Either it was cut from the film extremely late in the day, or they decided to fully 'fx' the scene while adding the seatbelt CG for test screenings.

Only place I added door whoosh sounds was on Picard walking out the door in the B4 scene since I had to remove the audio there. Incidently the door sound in Nemesis sounds awful to my ears, like a cross between the normal whoosh sound and what the doors actually sound like on the set.

Wow, thanks for doing that dude. Great work. :)

The chair gag feels a bit forced, but I love the Geordi/Worf scene, and I'm thrilled to finally see the Beverly/Picard farewell in context.

Overall, I think this is a better ending.

BTW: I wonder why Data removed his emotion chip?

I loved this ending, it's little things like this that add heart to the film. Too bad they were left on the cutting room floor.

Very nice! A don't think it was too fan-oriented at all. You don't have no have prior knowledge of Data's cat and violin playing too appreciate that scene. The ending still lacks a little in flow, but you can only work with what you've got. Star Trek II's ending was a lot longer, but it was more connected.

I also really like this ending. Especially since this is likely the last TNG film it would have been better to provide more character moments like these.

Great work StewMc! I wish that was the version of the film on DVD, it was much more poignant to me than the theatrical cut. If they ever do re-edit the film back together I might actually buy the DVD.

Your extended ending provides more closure to me than the original does. I never liked that it just ended with Picard walking down the corridor.

Good job!

The only things that really needed to be cut IMO was the scene with Picard and B4 and the seatbelt gag. The rest is fine as is.

My reasoning:

The Picard/B4 scene is only necessary if you're setting up a sequel. Well more than likely there'll never be another TNG flick so setting up a sequel is unneccessary. Also Data's wake and the scene with Worf and George cleaning up Data' quarters are sufficient when it comes to mourning Data' character we don't need yet a third it's redundant and nobody gives a shit about B4 anyway.

Also the seatbelt gag though funny is really only relevant to a joke in the Enterprise pilot where Hoshi asks if they can install a seatbelt. It's a payoff 200 years in the making and just prolongs the ending of the movie. Better to drop it and give Picard one last moment with his new Number One before sailing off into the sunset.

Great stuff

Although, it does seem weird as to why Starfleet would issue them with orders to exlpore the Denab system when they're still in spacedock, in the middle of repairs which will take a few weeks I'd imagine

Anyway, still excellent stuff though

I really enjoyed this. I think it's too long, though. Too drawn out. I did like the opportunity to see the extra scenes, particularly the scene with Geordi and Worf in Data's quarters. I enjoyed that scene more than the scene with Picard and B4. I don't really care for the scene with Riker and the new first officer, either. It's a bit of a jeuvenile trick, I think.

If you watch the deleted scenes as they are on the disc this will make sense to you.

I think it was an attempt to fuel the "change is inevitable, everyone is moving on, life is a highway" theme that mostly got left on the cutting room floor.
