Nein Nunb: what went wrong?

The Resistance that Leia has put together doesn't have many resources so far. He may be flying a fighter because that is the best use of his talents out of the ships they actually have available.

That says a lot abut the Resistance.

Either they have no better use for a hero with years of experience other than to stick him into an x-wing.

Or Nein Nunb has no useful skills or experience, so might as well stick him into an w-wing.

Either way, that sucks.
True, but...
...now that the rest of the galaxy has seen their capital and representatives blown the heck up, now that those opposed to Leia in the government are presumably dead, and now that Leia and her squad have survived, they might have some new resources rolling in from other planets in the Republic soon to back them against the Imperial Remnant or whatever it's called.
And then maybe Nunb can upgrade from X-Wing pilot back up to co-pilot of a crappy Corellian freighter or something. ;)

It still seems like a promotion DOWN.

And that's my whole point. In 30 years that's as far as he's gotten... the other side of the ship parking lot.

What a way to aim high, Nein.

Why do you assume that he stayed in the military continuously from his first appearance in Return of the Jedi until his most recent appearance in The Force Awakens?

Maybe he spent four years on active duty during the Galactic Civil War, then left the service and went into civilian life, and only rejoined at his original rank when the Resistance began recruiting, shortly before the events of the most recent film?

I mean, come on. MOST PEOPLE who join the military are NOT career folk.

He met a girl or a boy... He left, they had a life... then, his heart was broken. And he was left with one choice... go back to the only place that wanted him...

And how desperate is the Resistance... "Oh, haven't been in the military for a few decades? No problem, let's put you on the front line... I'm sure nothing will go wrong there."

It's easier to get an experienced pilot up to speed after a long absence than it is to train a new pilot. A couple weeks in sims and practice is really all he'd need.

Wouldn't it be better to use that experienced pilot to train new pilots? Younger pilots who have better reaction times?

And experience didn't mean much, he's still just taking orders.

Some awful smuggling incident with Lando must have botched his life up somehow. We don't even see Lando around

ooo. I like where this idea is heading.

"Nein, welcome back, hey, where's Lando?"
"Er. Uh. You know, he, uh, you know, hey, is that a new x-wing?"
"Seriously, where's Lando?"
"What am I, his mom? Jeez. I gotta go fly this x-wing."

So many assumptions! How long does a Sullustan live? Nein Nunb might just now be entering the prime of his life.

It's all right there in his autobiography: Comfortably Nunb, A Sullust For Life

"There is no pain, you are receding:
A distant Death Star smoke over Endor.
You are only coming through in waves;
Your lips move but I think the Empire's jamming...

"When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like human paws!
Now I've got a bad feeling again.
I can't explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am
I have become... comfortably Nunb."

AH. So then, as a young teen he was piloting the Falcon. A young hero, perhaps drunk on it, set out to sow some oats... a lot of oats. And then, just as he is entering the prime of his life, he wakes up... all the women he has loved have walked out, no money, no career...

...So he turns back to the one thing that gave him anything... The Resistance.

You have won the internet for today.

Who's to say he was an active pilot in military operations all that time?

Maybe he was just in the reserves for thirty years and never saw active duty, while absorbed by a day job at a spice shipping corporation, working his way up from clerk, to senior accountant, to finance director, to CEO.

And then, said, in a coke fueled outburst to the board of directors, "Fuck ya'll, there are bigger and better things than running a company! Sitting in a tiny little space ship, Tie Fighters screaming around you, that is fucking LIVING, man! I AM OUTTA HERE."

That's how I see it going down.
