Neil Armstrong has died

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-19381098

I'm not sure if this necessarily belongs in the TV & Media forum but the footage of the Moon landings are so iconic that I think it can be justified.

.

I don't think theres a forum on the board where this thread wouldn't fit; the man is a personal hero to many of us.

RIP sir, I hope we can build on your legacy, eventually.

Indeed. It was truly shocking to come across this this afternoon. It's just... Wow. Incredible to think of. Can we all chip in to send some of his ashes to the moon?

I mean, this was man who is just inspiring, really a hero to me.

I like the ashes on the moon idea. How about some on the next Mars mission as well. He wanted to see us get there. /** RIP dear sir.

I'd like to see Curiosity renamed Armstrong or something. My Lunar Geology isn't very good but I assume some surface feature of it is already named "Armstrong" or something.

A true pioneer, who did boldly go where no man has gone before, has now gone into the truly unknown. Rest in peace, my hero, rest in peace.

Sad that he didn't live to see people return to the moon. Undoubtedly the Columbus of our age.

I must say, given that this is a board populated by sci-fi fans, in particular Star Trek fans, a show whose airing on tv coincided with the Space Race and the Moon landings, I'm surprised that there hasn't been more of a response to this news.

I can't honestly claim to know a lot about Armstrong the man - he was a private person, not someone of the tabloid age. But given what he represents - the forerunner of Captains Archer, Kirk and Picard and given the achievement he accomplished - putting a human being on another world, with computers smaller than the ones in your phone or your car, less than 70 years after man first flew - I would have expected more than 12 responses.

"One small step for man..." :(

RIP, Neil Armstrong. You were--and continue to be--an inspiration to so many who desire to boldly go where no one has gone before.

There's been quite a response between the Trekkers in the three NA threads open on the board currently as well with the Trekkers on Facebook. Hell, it's one event we can all pretty much agree on. That the man was someone to look up to, admire, and truly mourn.

I was thinking that also but then thought that perhaps since the news broke late on a Saturday evening/night(depending on where you are, our global BBSers would be well into night) that more would respond tomorrow at some point during the day.

Bloody hell. A true hero, and an explorer who can rightfully stand beside any of the greatest captains in Star Trek.

Four threads with ~120 replies between them on the first day seems like a pretty decent response to me. It's just split between them so it doesn't seem like as much.
