Hey,

nice forum! just a really neeeb question. I'm starting to watch star trek now for the first time ever :p lame so late I know but better late then never... I've started out with TNG was this a bad move? I was planning on watching all the series and the coming back to TOS. Would appreciate your opinion.

Thanks in advance,
ricardo

Hey, watch whatever captures your imagination.

I would, however, recommend watching a few episodes of The Original Series before seeing the movies I-VI, so that you have some understanding of the characters.

Other than that, each series stands pretty much on its own.

Welcome to our world.

Do you like the first couple seasons of TNG? Because I find them difficult to stomach - some of Trek's worst, really - and TNG in general has not aged well - but if you find them entertaining, then by all means continue. After that, try: TOS-DS9-VOY-ENT.

But if you find yourself getting ansty or bored, skip ahead to S3. You won't be missing much.

One of us! One of us! ;)

This is how I watched Trek; I started young with TNG, then DS9/Voyager, then Enterprise, then TOS. So long as you watch the three TNG series in order then I don't think it matters how you watch Enterprise or TOS.

Something kind of important happens in 3 which I think he would need to watch in order to understand 4 and 6. :p

I watched TOS and TNG at the same time. One was being aired, and the other was in syndication. As for which one is better to watch first, not to sure. But I definitely recommend watching TOS before the movies.

My advice to the OP.

1) Never listen to the Vorta, especially the female ones, they are tricksy and devious!

2) TNG is great, watching it is never a mistake. The first two seasons might have a few problems but they've still got some good Sci-Fi stories.

yeah thats true. but its hard to sit through that movie.

I'm on my way to the second season of TNG and haven't found the problems described above with the series. Except maybe the episode "Too Short a Season" which a bit boring and the plot is quite expected.
Apart from that I am happy I didn't start off with the wrong foot and that you guys replied so promptly. Your guidance is quite appreciated!

If you liked season 1 of TNG then season 3 is going to blow your mind. There is only 3 or 4 episodes from season 1 which I would consider watchable, but seasons 3 through 6 are the golden age for that show.

Actually, there is a proper way to watch all the Star Trek series. Start with TOS, watching them in order. Then wait 10 years before watching any thing else. You may watch the original episodes over again, preferably on steadily deteriorating video tape. You may go to a couple TOS conventions, and read some TOS novels.

AFTER, the 10 years is up, you may watch ST: The Motion Picture, and have the experience of truly appreciating it the way we did. Then watch everything else in broadcast order.

If you start to lose interest at any point, watch the original Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers in the 24th Century.

That should do you.
