Small ones, mind, but not those annoying ones you have to push right in like you get with the iPod. The damn things will never stay in. So, any brands I should look out for? Any I should avoid?

I think Sennheiser currently dominates the mid-price consumer headphones market.
If it were purely a question of getting the best sound for the least money, I'd recommend a Sennheiser HD-202 (or 203, 204, whatever the latest revision is). Excellent sound for about 15 pounds.
If you want smaller, you could look at their foldable P(M)X range.

I've got a set of KOSS Titanium KTX-PRO1s that are lightweight, and had a very nice titanium diaphram (speaker) that does bass real well (as low as 15Hz).
Best of all, you can listen to them for long periods of time at relatively high volume and never get the ear ringing effect afterwards. With iPod earbuds and so forth you do, because even higher volume levels are required, yet you don't hear it that much better if at all.

The Sennheiser's look pretty reasonable, so I'll probably go with one of those.
Thanks for that link. You may have turned me onto a set of Grados whenever I need a new set.
