Need Novel Help!

As you may or may not know, I write novels as a hobby, though some day I'd like to get published. I believe that all works should teach some kind of lesson to the reader or at least cause some kind of deep thought on issues, as heavy handed as that may sound.

I have been considering writing a novel in a dystopian future where the current Middle Eastern tensions degrade into a Christian/Muslim war.

However, this topic does not come without its obvious landmines.

My question is how do you think this story could be written to avoid said landmines?

I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone may have!

Well, you could make it into an allegory of it without directly using those religions. Otherwise... hello, fatwa!

Why do you need to avoid the landmines? If you don't intend to publish the book immediately than write what your heart and brain tell you to write and then get people you trust to provide feedback to you once it is done.

Sounds like a subject that is best served by focusing on the landmines.

^ Wow, good point.

By focusing on the landmines, you look at the Western view of Islam and the Islamic perspective of the use of such landmines and when that line is crossed.

May not be the type of story the OP wants to write, though.

I did have a thought about setting it in more modern times with a stranded Air Force pilot.

Well, the "easy" way would be to have an American muslim character who is "caught in the middle".
