need help with dvd component cables

ok so I bought an lcd tv last week & Im trying to hook up one of our two dvd players to it: a progressive scan dvd thats hooked up on my mom's tv & an older model I bought for my old tube about 9 years ago. The problem is Im having trouble with the component cables:

in the newer pro scan model I cant get them to fit b/c the cables are so thick that even though they fit in the holes they are so crowded that they push each other out. I cant even hold them in without them popping out! The tv picks up the signal but one of the 3 colors in the image will be missing.

in the older model they fit better but are still pretty loose. And even when I push all three in with my hand & hold them in the tv cant pick up any signal. Maybe this dvd player is too old to be compatable with the lcd tv(though it works when I use the regular yellow white & red cables)?

anyone know what could be wrong?

ok well I finally got them to fit into the pro-scan player, I had to take the player out of the shelf, sit it on its front & push in each cable making sure they were turned in the right postion so that the cable next to it would fit. The player & the tv cant be too far from each other b/c the cables need a lot of slack, if they are pulled too tight they wont fit in properly. Now I gotta fgure out how to get the player back into its shelf stand. :\
