Need Help with an 80's Sci-Fi series....

There was this series I once watched as a little drooling kid in the 80's. I think it was on CBS or NBC, here is some of the things I remember from it.

There was this guy who was from Europra or soemthing he was visting earth and very much a "fish out of water".

He travelled with this floating slug creature with one big eye who would remain invisible most of the time and would help him out by zapping things.

He wondered from town to town helping people.


I don't remember the name of it, or anything else, just have faded memories of watching it, it seems to me it was a TV show, but it could have been a movie. Any Ideas?

Yeah, sounds like Hard Time on Planet Earth to me. Martin Kove as an alien criminal exiled to Earth to redeem himself, accompanied by a floating CGI watchdog/helper whose catchphrase was "Negative outcome -- not good." A decent show, but it lacked the sort of thing that "Stranger in a strange land" shows should have: a human character to serve as the alien protagonist's guide and help him connect with humanity.
