Need cell phone help! Should I get an I Phone

Just don't go crazy buying Apps. IMHO most are crap, see if their is a free version of an App you want first. If you use it a lot, then buy the paid one. The only App I highly recommend is MLB at bat 2010 if you are a baseball fan.

^Shouldn't we have an app thread? -I for one would really like to know what kind of stuff people do on their portables!

I -for instance- just added TrekBBS search to the Touch Search widget on my device :rommie:

Thanks all for the advice, decided on an I pnone; love it! Just got out of an apple store as pleased as I can be. Making this post from it in the car right now! Fracking awesome!

Congrats on your purchase! I've got an iPhone 3G that I've been using for a year and a half now. Love it. I absolutely despise Blackberry (I have one for work and I find it cumbersome to use) and I'm not all that interested in Android/Google but my friend just got one of their phones and he really likes it.

Well, I got my e-mail set up, no prob there, the thing I've been banging my head on my desk about is the sync... it just won't sync. I can get pics off it but I can't get pics, music or vids loaded onto it. I downloaded itunes, it's doesn't even acknowledge it exists...very frustrating... I've been to every help site I can find still no help. I fear I may need to take a couple workshops at the apple store.

I love my iPhone and I don't even have a data plan (its jailbroken and I'm using my company sim car in it). I can't imagine having any other phone, but I might not be saying that if I was paying for the service.

I'm all about my Nexus One with Android over iPhones.

The hand holding that device looks like Roy Batty's from Blade Runner. BTW, this is a good topic, as I'm undecided on whether I even need a smart phone, let alone an iPhone.

Are you running windows or mac?

I have a PC with XP, nothing special. I also have a laptop with vista but it's in the shop for a couple weeks.

You're certain you have the most recent iTunes? (9.1) (You said you just downloaded it, but check the version number, just to be safe.)

Also, you said it won't sync...does the phone even show up in iTunes at all? (On the sidebar.) If so, can you select the iPhone icons and click the 'Check for Update' button? That'll update the iPhone software in case you bought one with old software on it.

Also run Microsoft Update to make sure your Windows is all up to date and re-set the whole computer after you've done all this.

EDIT: Also, are you sure you're looking in the right place? Do you see the 'Devices' section at all? Does it need to be clicked to expand it or anything like that? Or is there just nothing there?

Congratulations on the iPhone. I've really liked mine EXCEPT for the occasional dropped call. However, AT&T has a free app for that called Mark the Spot. You can report any dropped calls, slow connections, etc.

iTunes 9.1: check
Windows update: check

iTunes doesn't even read the iPhone...

The only thing my PC wants to read is the iPhone as a camera... I added the iPhone playlist... did nothing.

Have you tried different USB ports? Are you plugging directly into the computer and not going through a hub or something like that?

I tried plugging it into every USB port alone even, nothing. I left the iPhone on and restarted the PC and got something new, iTunes started up automatically and gave me this error message:

itunes could not connect to this iphone because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000065)

 annoying...

Seems to be some kind of problem with Windows Media Player conflicting with drivers...or something? I'm not really sure myself.

I honestly wouldn't try to fix this alone if I were you. You should call Apple tech support and explain it to them. I'm betting they can walk you through a fix far faster than you could figure it out by reading online message boards.

 Oh, just a bit on the old side... like 5 years...

:shifty:

Maybe I should wait till I get my laptop back...

New computer is on the list.

I'd say go for a flip phone. I don't see the appeal of a phone with internet access, and video games and all the other nonsense that you could do much better with on your desk top or laptop. The screen on those phones is way too small for any of that to be practical. All I use my phone for is to talk to people, and, on rare occasions, I use the camera, but not very often. And I never send texts, with those small keypads, typing a message is next to impossible, and takes weeks if not years. And, I save a bundle on monthly charges by not having all those "frills".
