Gary Kerr, who is a friend who posts regularly on hobbyTalk.com, was on the restoration team, and kept we Trek modelers updated throughout. His thread over there is a gold mine of info on the big model.

I find the wiring inside fascinating on how they used such thin wires and tiny, tiny lights for things.

Oh and Mortiss and Tenon joints to hold stuff together, who would have thought? I'm planning to make boxes using those same joints, it's the only thing I remember from woodwork in high school.

Me too it's a bucket list kind of thing. I'd love to visit the USA and see the Smithsonian and all the various different museums in it.

Yes, hoping to get to the Smithsonian and the Star Trek set in the Adirondacks later this summer.

Hoping to see more of the detail talked about in the fifth section of the article.

Thanks for sharing!

The detail... that's amazing to me too, CrazyMatt. Only people who take pride in their work (and there are tons), regardless of who sees it, put that type of love into an item. Some of my most beautiful concrete finishes will never be seen... it's the happiness and joy of a perfect job that matters. :)

I vacationed in DC back in 1982, and saw the 11 foot Enterprise model at the NASM. They had it hanging from the ceiling, fairly high off the floor. I recall the red caps on the nacelles, with flashing lights inside them. She looked pretty bad back then, especially compared to what she looks like today. Nearby was a monitor showing a videotape that ran in a loop, I think it was something like a highlight reel from the show.

Somewhere in my house I have 30 or so slides that I shot of Enterprise that day, along with The Spirit of St. Louis, the Bell X-1 that Yeager broke the sound barrier in, the Wright Flyer, all that amazing stuff.

I was in DC last weekend and saw the 11 footer. I was actually a little disappointed with the display. It was really darkly lit and black curtains were drawn covering the starboard side and forward. I'm not sure why it wasn't more visible. I was hoping for a better look at the Starboard side.

My experience as well last November. As we approach the 1 year anniversary of its re-display, I hope they can install the promised defense system to protect it from sunlight, as opposed to some cubicle-style barriers and draping a black cloth over the top and front of the case (which make it look like something of an afterthought).

Shame. It's not super brightly lit anyway but it was open on all sides when I saw it in September.
