NCIS - worth it?

Isn't Marina Sirtis on this show now? That adds a certain Trek appeal, I imagine.
She was in one episode this season as Eli David's replacement in Mossad. I'm thinking she might become a recurring character, like Michael Nouri was.

ALSO, I want to know how Gibbs got the damn boat out of his basement.

Supposedly he has a wall he knocked out.

Don't ask me when it was explained I just remember the explanation.

I love the show. The first five years are especially great. It can get confusing at times if you're not watching in order. Don't let the procedural haters mislead you, there is a ton of character development and some great story arcs.

Any show that is on long enough, will eventually have character development and story arcs emerging. (Sometimes this may take numerous seasons, and/or spin off shows and movies). The Law & Order, CSI, Stargate, etc ... franchises were like this.

I know this show has been on forever, but I have never seen a single episode until about a month ago when I was flipping through the channels and came across Connor Trineer on the screen. I stoped and gave it a few minutes, and then Tim Russ showed up! Since then I've caught a few whole episodes, but mostly bits and pieces of shows (USA Network seems to really like NCIS). The stories are ok, but I really like the team dynamic between the characters. So how is this show overall? Should I invest some time in going back to the beginning or can I just start wherever?

Just keep watching NCIS on the USA Network. Eventually you'll see it all.

Another one of the many procedural type cop shows like Law & Order, CSI, the revived Hawaii Five-0, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, The Closer, Person of Interest, etc
The only one of those shows I've actually seen (i.e. more than two or three random episodes) is The Closer but I wouldn't call that a procedural, they did have a different murder case every week but the team dynamic evolved over time, the first season was almost serialized with how Brenda had to win them over and gain their respect and trust and her private life which was almost as important as the killer of the week was a continuing storyline.
Major Crimes, the follow up series (I won't call it a spin-off because they just promoted Mary McDonnell to main character and changed the title) is very similar, I love both shows, especially for the team dynamics, those characters rock.

NCIS (which I've watched on and off for years) is okay to watch occasionally but I don't think it's worth the time to try to catch up and watch it from the start (unlike The Closer ;) ).

I enjoyed it more in the earlier seasons when the focus was more on crimes within the Navy/Marine Corps and less on global espionage. It kinda feels like the current writers wish the show was called "CIA" instead of "NCIS."
Especially pronounced in the spinoff's spinoff, NCIS:Los Angeles were at times I don't believe the FBI exist and the CIA is in business to train future NCIS agents and turn coat mercenaries.

I've only seen a handful of episodes out of curiosity, having seen the Hawaii 5-0 crossover with NCIS spinoff NCIS:LA, which I enjoyed. I thought I'd check out the parent show (which is also a spinoff I understand, from a show called JAG).
And like the other CBS crime series in the post JAG era lawyers, JAG or otherwise, rarely show up. I can count on one hand the number of times a sailor or Marine asked for representation. I guess they don't want to be confused with Law & Order. Although the retired JAG did show up in the latest season finale to represent the lead, Special Agent Gibbs.

I think JAG is still on the CLOO network but I have no ideal how they make a schedule, they tend to marathon a different show on a random basis at times.

I happe. To be one of the biggest fans of NCIS and for someone to say its lame is crazy. I mean come on!! The show is #1 right now!!! I personally love this show but the season ten finale really pissed me off. I do think the writing has dwendled a bit but LOVE the cast!!!!! My favorite character is Tony Dinozzo(Micheal Weatherly)..hey he's he reason I watch the show now!! Look at my avatar!!! :) so yes, NCIS is definitely worth the watch..at least for me it is. And yes it's very popular on USA network-that's its second home actually. :) I'm very excited for year 11 to commence but am worried about how it'll all come about. I am thinking that sooner or later the show will come to an end and I'll be so upset.
One more comment...I watched the ep Berlin a few weeks ago where Tony and Ziva go off finding Bodnar and dance. Now I've never been emotionally attached to a TV show before but this episode had me crying for an hour and then angry afterwards. Why do endings have to be so...emotionally draining?!? Suffice to say I was the ending that had me crying.

I just figure that his eccentric genius, his being in crime detection and interrogation , he just destroys it on site and starts another one.

For those who are interested, the JAG episodes that led to NCIS are from season eight: "Ice Queen" and "Meltdown."
JAG turns up on CLOO once in a while, if you want to keep an eye out.

You are correct.

According to wikipedia, in the ep "Honor Code" he suggests about taking the wall out as a possible by not stated as how he does it.

Though didn't Mike Frank's girlfriend or something have one the boats that Gibbs had built suggesting they weren't demolished after being built?

You're referring to the episode "Out-Laws and In-Laws," in which a small sailboat built by Gibbs for Frank's granddaughter, Amira, turns up along the Calif. coast with two dead guys in it. And it wasn't Frank's girlfriend, it was his daughter-in-law, Leyla Shakarji.

Knew it was something to do with Franks but then I never liked the guy.

Harmon Rabb was not The JAG he was a JAG officer. Adm Chegwedden was THE JAG for most of the run replacing the first with the network change and retiring and being replaced by a Marine general in the last season. The admiral was on NCIS

I thought the return of Jackson in the last episode was a nice touch. Though, I wonder if they'd originally intended to bring in DJE and it didn't happen for whatever reason...

Funny thing about Jackson... I saw A Few Good Men the other day for the first time in forever. I had totally forgotten he was one of the JAG officers/Kaffee's superior. Type cast.
